TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe three efforts to design research on aspects of innovation in organization, along with the theoretical and empirical assumptions behind them, and each study occupies a different, progressively more macro-oriented tier in terms of level of analysis.
Abstract: This article describes three efforts to design research on aspects of innovation in organization, along with the theoretical and empirical assumptions behind them. Each study occupies a different, progressively more macro-oriented tier in terms of level of analysis—from the innovation project as the unit, to the organization, to the extraorganizational environment.

Abstract: Designing assessment programs requires defining objectives and choosing techniques. Implementing assessment, however, is an organizational responsibility. Administration should appropriately consider both sets of issues before embarking on such an effort.

TL;DR: A descriptive analysis of the authors and articles appearing in Research in Higher Education (RHI) since its inception in 1973 is given in this paper, where the authors, institutions and authors are ranked according to their "productivity" of authorship.
Abstract: A descriptive analysis is given of the authors and articles appearing inResearch in Higher Education (sponsored by the AIR), since the journal was founded in 1973. The analysis compares the 1980s with the 1970s according to subject matter, methodology, authors and institutions. The data suggest that coverage of higher education topics and research methodologies both are increasing, along with the variety of authors and the diversity of institutions. Institutions and authors are ranked according to their “productivity” of authorship.

TL;DR: In Sweden, as in many other countries, there are mounting demands for the evaluation of universities and colleges, usually on the grounds that research and higher education are playing a progressively more important part in development at progressively greater cost as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In Sweden, as in many other countries, there are mounting demands for the evaluation of universities and colleges, usually on the grounds that research and higher education are playing a progressively more important part in development at progressively greater cost. Quality and efficiency have to be guaranteed and audited. An additional reason is cited in Sweden: the ongoing decentralisation of decisionmaking powers. To this one might object that in Britain the opposite process appears to be taking place, but still with equally strong demands for evaluation. Evaluation the new watchword-now seems to be equally applicable in all situations and systems. It is often treated as a separate phenomenon, as an extraneous cure for all ills. But evaluation forms part of a complex to which its forms and functions have to be adapted if it is to have any real point. In the following pages I will try to analyse developments in Sweden during the past few years as regards evaluation in the higher education sector, and I shall do so by treating evaluation (1) as part of a steering system, (2) as a phase in an active process, and (3) as interaction within an institutional organisation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that executing surveys is one of the most common activities of institutional research (IR) and that as a craft, survey research is an orphan without a home in an academic discipline and therefore without a clear articulation of standards in its own right.
Abstract: This paper concludes that it is time for institutional research to address the issue of standards for the conduct of surveys. In reaching that conclusion, it argues that executing surveys is one of the most common activities of institutional research (IR) and one of the least served in IR literature; that as a craft, survey research is an orphan without a home in an academic discipline and therefore without a clear articulation of standards in its own right; and that as practiced in IR, survey research faces special technical problems and challenges not embraced in much of the general-survey research literature. Finally, it asks, but does not answer, how such a lofty goal as the pursuit of standards might be attained.

TL;DR: In this paper, a different perspective of the field is obtained from a content analysis of the employment classified advertising published in theChronicle of Higher Education from 1970 through 1985, using this technique of analysis, it is possible to compare and contrast institutional research as it appears in literature with the profile of field obtained from the content analysis.
Abstract: Institutional research has been profiled several times in the literature. These profiles have typically included only an examination of the history and functions of the profession. A different perspective of the field is obtained from a content analysis of the employment classified advertising published in theChronicle of Higher Education from 1970 through 1985. Using this technique of analysis, it is possible to compare and contrast institutional research as it appears in literature with the profile of the field obtained from the content analysis. The functions of institutional research and the qualifications of the people employed to perform these functions have changed since the advent of the profession. Institutional research, its past, the qualifications of its people, and possibilities for the future are examined in this paper.

TL;DR: A study of grading practices at Christopher Newport College (VA) was conducted, using as data the grades awarded from 1979 to 1986 as discussed by the authors, and the overall conclusions are that departmental and/or disciplinary differences, transcending institutional boundaries, affect grade point average elevation considerably.
Abstract: A study of grading practices at Christopher Newport College (Virginia) was conducted, using as data the grades awarded from 1979 to 1986. Differences between "in-department" and "out-of-department" grades were also analyzed, for all students enrolled in courses in more than one department. Results included the following: (1) the average grade of the semester just completed was 2.70, higher than the official designation of the average grade; (2) there were pronounced differences in grading among departments; (3) average grades increased during the period studied; and (4) analysis of departmental differences does not support the departments' claim that superior students in a given department account for the differences. An inter-institutional study, now ongoing, was then undertaken. A total of 351 peer institutions was survey' with a response rate of 35%. Preliminary results from the ongtx.ag analyses are discussed. Among the overall conclusions is that departmental and/or disciplinary differences, transcending institutional boundaries, affect grade point average elevation considerably. Data analyses are appended in tables and figures. Contains 4 references.
