TL;DR: An efficient handover mechanism for Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks is proposed and both moving direction prediction and Time-to-Trigger (TTT) adjustment are taken into consideration for processing to lower the unnecessary handover.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an efficient handover mechanism for Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Both moving direction prediction and Time-to-Trigger (TTT) adjustment are taken into consideration for processing to lower the unnecessary handover. By referencing previous locations, user equipment’s (UE) moving direction is estimated by the cosine function to determine a better destined E-UTRAN NodeB (eNB). With adaptive TTT, we categorize UEs into 3 levels according to the velocity. Initially, TTT value is given for each level, and the value is decremented when the handover failure rate gets higher. In addition, we also combine both approaches of moving direction prediction and adaptive TTT into handover procedure. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the handover efficiency. As compared with the standard handover procedure, an average reduction of 31% handovers can be obtained by applying the moving direction prediction. And, as compared with fixed TTT, up to the 36.5% of handover trigger failure rate can be expected by using the adaptive TTT handover triggering approach. The performance can be further improved when both approaches are taken in dealing with the handover procedure.

TL;DR: A mobile station-controlled reliable target base station selection scheme for energy-aware handover in natural disaster affected areas and the UE's movement direction prediction, which offers three significant benefits during natural disasters.
Abstract: Existing cellular networks and their services are not equipped enough to deal with such emergency situations that arise following natural disasters like an earthquake or tornado. Often, immediately after a natural disaster, cellular base stations (BS) in the affected areas face power outage problems and their backup power does not last long owing mostly to traffic overloading. This paper proposes a mobile station-controlled reliable target base station selection scheme for energy-aware handover in natural disaster affected areas. In this scheme, an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) mobile station (user equipment or UE), self-selects the target base station (target evolved nodeB or TeNB) based on two independent parameters, namely, the leftover backup power of the different BSs (Evolved Node B or eNB) in affected areas and the UE's movement direction prediction. The proposed handover scheme offers three significant benefits during natural disasters. Firstly, existing connections continue to receive good QoS. Secondly, new connections are diverted to less-overloaded nearby BSs. Finally, residual battery life of BSs is considerably prolonged.

TL;DR: This paper analyzes how the delay performance in the layer 2 (L2) process of LTE is affected depending on the traffic pattern and radio propagation environment and conducts numerical simulations that consider the L2 processes.
Abstract: Most real-time multimedia services like VoIP (voice over IP), TV conference and real-time gaming require low end-to-end delay. In the near future, it is expected that more delay sensitive applications such as cloud computing or telepresence will appear. LTE (long term evolution) is able to provide real-time services in mobile environments. LTE is designed to have an end-to-end delay of less than 5ms. The delay performance in LTE may, however, be degraded by the radio propagation environment or traffic pattern. For example, if the quality of radio signal is poor, more retransmission is required between eNB (evolved NodeB) and UE (user equipment) which degrades the delay performance. If packet size is large, the packets may be segmented which also degrades the delay performance. Thus it is very difficult to predict the delay performance of LTE system prior to its installation. This paper analyzes how the delay performance in the layer 2 (L2) process of LTE is affected depending on the traffic pattern and radio propagation environment. We conduct numerical simulations that consider the L2 processes. The numerical simulation correctly estimates the delay pattern even in a realistic fading environment.

Abstract: A gateway turns encrypted PS data traffic on the Iub interface into clear IP packets so that WAN stream de-duplication and other optimization can be performed to eliminate the transfer of repetitive data across the Iub interface, thereby increasing the throughput between the NodeB and the RNC of the WCDMA network. The gateway pulls PS data traffic out from Iub without disturbing the signaling and CS traffic. The bifurcated PS data traffic is redirected to the GTP I/O port of the gateway where the stream de-duplication is applied. Deployment of the gateway is transparent to the WCDMA network. No network reconfiguration is required to deploy the gateway on the Iub interface.

TL;DR: The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the coverage performance of the Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) can meet the requirements in LTE-A super coverage with the proposed method.
Abstract: Aiming at the uplink out-of-synchronization resulted from the long distance between the UE (User Equipment) and eNodeB (evolved NodeB) in LTE-A (Long Term Evolution-Advanced) super coverage, a time-domain-cascade-correlation method for estimating TA (Timing Advance) is proposed in this paper. Based on the design of the random access preamble structure, the eNodeB achieves the estimation of TA by cascading two different ZC (Zadoff-Chu) sequences to form the preamble sequence and detecting the delay of channel with the sliding correlation in the time domain. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the coverage performance of the Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) can meet the requirements in LTE-A super coverage with the proposed method.

TL;DR: A system-level simulation platform based on interference avoidance scheme is developed which provides a tool to observe the interference and analyse the performance of hybrid network and results prove that the coexistence of the cellular and D2D links will bring obvious contribution to the sum capacity of Hybrid network.
Abstract: Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is the technology enabling user equipment (UE) to directly communicate with each other without help of evolved nodeB (eNB) which caters to the demand for high spectrum efficiency. This work focuses on the hybrid network which contains multiple Cellular UEs and D2D UEs. D2D communication shares up-link resource with cellular system and improves the performance of the entire network. However, by introducing D2D communication into cellular systems, the mutual interference between D2D links and cellular links may be severe. We accordingly develop a system-level simulation platform based on interference avoidance scheme. It provides a tool to observe the interference and analyse the performance of hybrid network. The simulation results prove that the coexistence of the cellular and D2D links will bring obvious contribution to the sum capacity of hybrid network.

TL;DR: The results show that PNC is suitable for interference mitigation in femtocell network and it provides significant gain over the traditional scheme.
Abstract: The challenge of mitigating the Uplink (UL) interference in a two-tier heterogeneous network could be significantly improved by employing Physical-Layer Network coding (PNC) at a Home NodeB (HNB). This paper makes a case for a macrocell femtocell overlay network that utilizes PNC to mitigate the UL interference at the HNB. In closed subscriber group (CSG) UL information exchange, a Macrocell User Equipment (MUE), especially situated at coverage area's edge of a macrocell nodeB (MNB), creates interference that could make the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratios (SINR) of the neighboring HNB to fall below the acceptable threshold. In a bid to ensure that the Service Quality (QoS) of femtocell and macrocell users are guaranteed, we propose to use PNC at the HNB by taking advantage of both the signals from the MUE and the Home User Equipment (HUE), rather than considering the signal from the MUE as interference. The paper develops the analytical expression of outage probability in closed-form, or equivalently the cummulative distribution function (CDF) for the received SINR of the proposed system is provided. Our results show that PNC is suitable for interference mitigation in femtocell network and it provides significant gain over the traditional scheme.
