TL;DR: A method for locating specific character strings embedded in character text is described and an implementation of this method in the form of a compiler is discussed.
Abstract: A method for locating specific character strings embedded in character text is described and an implementation of this method in the form of a compiler is discussed. The compiler accepts a regular expression as source language and produces an IBM 7094 program as object language. The object program then accepts the text to be searched as input and produces a signal every time an embedded string in the text matches the given regular expression. Examples, problems, and solutions are also presented.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for electronically generating and displaying shaded perspective images of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional view plane by providing electrical signals representative of the surfaces of an object and identifying and utilizing only the signals representing visible surfaces to display the perspective images is presented.
Abstract: A method and system for electronically generating and displaying shaded perspective images of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional view plane by providing electrical signals representative of the surfaces of an object and identifying and utilizing only the signals representing visible surfaces to display the perspective images. More specifically, electrical signals defining surfaces of a three-dimensional object are converted to define the projections of the surfaces onto a two-dimensional image or view plane defined by a raster scan display device. The converted signals defining surfaces which are to be displayed, depending on the desired orientation of the object, are determined by comparing the relative depths of segments of the surfaces along each scan line of the display and selectively subdividing the scan lines according to the visual characteristics of the segments when necessary. Signals defining the visible segments are then utilized to control the intensity of the display. The visibility determination and subsequent displaying of the visible surfaces are provided at a real time rate, i.e., at the scanning rate of the display which may be on the order of 1/30 second.

TL;DR: In this paper, an object is placed beneath a light-sensing element such as an optical fiber and the object is then scanned in different directions under computer control, by producing relative movement between it and the light sensing element to ascertain the shapes of a number of these areas, and the position within each such areas of a characteristic point such as the center of gravity or the centre of one particular edge, of each such area.
Abstract: The object it is desired to position has areas thereon whose peripheral edges are boundries between light and dark regions. For example, the areas may be metal electrodes which appear light and are located on a dark substrate. This object is placed beneath a light-sensing element such as an optical fiber. The object is then scanned in different directions under computer control, by producing relative movement between it and the light-sensing element to ascertain the shapes of a number of these areas, and the position within each such area of a characteristic point such as the center of gravity or the center of one particular edge, of each such area. The coordinates of these points are compared with reference coordinates previously stored in the computer memory for calculating the translational and/or the rotational movement required to center the object and for imparting this movement to the object.

Abstract: A real time holographic interferometer for measuring height variations or contours on the surface of an object is disclosed. Two interference patterns are formed, one of an object whose surface is to be mapped and one of a reference plane or other standard surface using holographic techniques. The interference patterns form visual inputs to a television camera which converts them into electrical signals. These electrical signals are combined to produce an output which contains information relative to the height variations or altitude contours of the object and the height contour information is displayed on an appropriate display device.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for scanning an object and obtaining a threedimensional display of the features of the object is described, where internal discontinuities within the scanned object can be detected and visually displayed.
Abstract: A system for scanning an object and obtaining a threedimensional display of the features of the object is described. Internal discontinuities within the scanned object can be detected and visually displayed. The system includes a transmitting element which transmits energy to the object under investigation. The energy transmitted to the object can be of a form which will pass through the object, for example, ultrasonic waves to obtain a view of internal features. Energy passing through the object is reflected back to the surface through which it entered the object by discontinuities within the object. The reflected waves are received by the scanning device where they are divided into separate channels. The two channels individually process the received signals which are then used to actuate a read-out device such as an oscilloscope. The visual read-out from the oscilloscope is then photographed by use of a stereo camera and a three-dimensional picture is obtained.

Abstract: Inspection and grading system for threaded objects comprising sequential detection, measurement, and comparison of major and minor diametral values of a threaded object while in motion. Such values are determined along the pitch angle of the threaded object throughout its longitudinal length. Measurements are made cyclically as the object is guided through the detection zone. The measured values are evaluated e.g., by sequential comparison to computer stored values of a standard threaded object and accepted or rejected based on the selective discrimination level. The objects are counted and classified.

TL;DR: The authors define the primary function of language as communication, and define a set of related features: function and form, which can be classified into two categories: lexical content and lexical form.
Abstract: LANGUAGE AND HISTORY While it is difficult to establish a close relationship between language form and the racial or cultural characteristics of its speakers, an intimate relationship does exist between culture and language content. The study of language content needs no special justification, since the written records of antiquity are our most valuable source of information concerning the peoples and civilizations which form the object of historical investigation. But language as a formal structure, like the tools and institutions of a society, represents a kind of transmitted organism and as such falls into the category of data which can be ordered in typologically related sequences. Thus, for the historian, who is interested primarily in tracing interacting continuities, the study of the history and development of a language, apart from its use as a vehicle for oral and written traditions, provides useful and sometimes unique evidence of otherwise undiscernible ethnic and cultural affiliations. LANGUAGE CHANGE The evolution of a language through time is most conveniently described in terms of two distinct but related features: function and form. Limiting ourselves for the moment to spoken language, we may define the primary function of language as communication. It is virtually axiomatic that a language, in order to serve the communication needs of a given community effectively, must keep pace with cultural changes within that community. That one is static implies that the other is also static, a generally unlikely situation. The ever-changing communication needs of a community will thus be reflected in its language, and mainly in lexical content rather than in form. It is more or less irrelevant whether such changes are internal (evolutionary) or caused by some impetus from outside the community in question.

TL;DR: An on-line digital computer processing system is considered in which an ordinary telephone is the complete terminal device, input to the computer being provided as a sequence of spoken words and output to the user being audio responses from the machine.
Abstract: An on-line digital computer processing system is considered in which an ordinary telephone is the complete terminal device, input to the computer being provided as a sequence of spoken words, and output to the user being audio responses from the machine. The feasibility of implementing such a system with a FORTRAN-like algebraic compiler as the object processor is considered. Details of a specific word recognition program are given. This technique depends on three simplifying restrictions, namely, a “small” vocabulary set, “known” speakers, and a “moment of silence” between each input word. Experimental results are presented giving error rates for different experimental conditions as well as the machine resources required to accommodate several users at a time. The results show that at this time it is both economically and logically feasible to handle at least 40 users at a time with an IBM 360/65 computer.
