TL;DR: The purpose of this research was to further investigate the hydrodynamics of the United States Pharmacopeia paddle dissolution apparatus using a previously generated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, and found that the fluid in this region was undergoing solid body rotation.
Abstract: The purpose of this research was to further investigate the hydrodynamics of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) paddle dissolution apparatus using a previously generated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model The influence of paddle rotational speed on the hydrodynamics in the dissolution vessel was simulated The maximum velocity magnitude for axial and tangential velocities at different locations in the vessel was found to increase linearly with the paddle rotational speed Path-lines of fluid mixing, which were examined from a central region at the base of the vessel, did not reveal a region of poor mixing between the upper cylin-drical and lower hemispherical volumes, as previously speculated Considerable differences in the resulting flow patterns were observed for paddle rotational speeds between 25 and 150 rpm The approximate time required to achieve complete mixing varied between 2 to 5 seconds at 150 rpm and 40 to 60 seconds at 25 rpm, although complete mixing was achievable for each speed examined An analysis of CFD-generated velocities above the top surface of a cylindrical compact positioned at the base of the vessel, below the center of the rotating paddle, revealed that the fluid in this region was undergoing solid body rotation An examination of the velocity boundary layers adjacent to the curved surface of the compact revealed large peaks in the shear rates for a region within∼3 mm from the base of the compact, consistent with a ‘grooving’ effect, which had been previously seen on the surface of compacts following dissolution, associated with a higher dissolution rate in this region

TL;DR: The Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC) as discussed by the authors is a novel shoreline or near-shore wave energy converter that is designed to couple strongly with the horizontal particle motion, permitting large amplitudes of motion of the working surface whilst minimising energy losses in associated water particle motions.
Abstract: The Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC) is a novel shoreline or near-shore wave energy converter. The concept has developed from an analysis of the performance of the LIMPET shoreline oscillating water column. This analysis showed that the hydrodynamics of shoreline wave energy converters are highly non-linear and that they have a qualitatively different response to similar devices that are sited in deeper water. In particular, the water particle motion in shallow water is predominantly horizontal, with elongated wave troughs and heightened wave peaks. The OWSC is designed to couple strongly with the horizontal particle motion, permitting large amplitudes of motion of the working surface whilst minimising energy losses in associated water particle motions. The OWSC consists of a paddle rotating about a horizontal axis above the water surface and perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. The paddle hangs at the mouth of a gully, effectively forming a 'water column' between the paddle and gully back wall. Thus, the OWSC is similar to the Japanese 'Pendulor' system; however the OWSC uses resonance of the water column rather than harbour resonance as its operating principle. A limited study of geometric parameters using a two-dimensional wave-tank model has been performed. Results from these experiments have shown that the 'water column' has an effect on the paddle dynamics and OWSC performance, with the OWSC having a higher power capture than both a shoreline oscillating water column (OWC) and Pendulor in shallow water. The potential for the OWSC in the shoreline and near-shore regions is also discussed, with implications for construction costs and the price for electricity generated by the OWSC. Potential control strategies for the OWSC are also discussed, together with their likely effect on operation and performance.

Abstract: An experimental methodology was developed to improve the energy design of paddle dryers for sewage sludges. A laboratory batch dryer with a vertical agitator has been especially designed and instrumented to determine the heat flux densities. To determine the drying kinetic and the evaporation rates, the specific heat and the total heat of desorption of the sludge were measured using calorimetric devices. The evaporating flow rates recorded during the pasty and granular phases were then used in a simple model of the paddle dryer. The good agreement between the computed drying kinetics and the experimental ones measured in an industrial paddle dryer shows that the batch dryer can be used to classify the sludges according to their capacity to be dried in a paddle dryer.

TL;DR: In this article, a paddle wheel is stationarily positioned to penetrate the surface of a body of water and a plurality of paddle wheels are deployed on a single floating platform to optimize the transfer of the energy contained in the flow of water passing the floating platform.
Abstract: Electricity is produced by harvesting energy from flowing water, which does not harm the environment and which does not consume natural resources. A paddle wheel is stationarily positioned to penetrate the surface of a body of water. Preferably, a plurality of paddle wheels are deployed on a single floating platform to optimize the transfer of the energy contained in the flow of water passing the floating platform. Each paddle wheel is geared to rapidly rotate a generator axle of an electricity generator of the type conventionally deployed for wind turbines on “wind farms”. Preferably, each paddle wheel powers a plurality of electricity generators. Structure is provided to compensate for variations in flow rates in the body of water to intensify a flow of the water and to vary a depth of penetration of the paddle wheel into the water.

TL;DR: In this paper, a paddle switch operated by pushing on the lower portion of a rocker paddle to turn the switch “on” or “off” is disclosed, where the lower edge of the paddle pivots in and out about its upper edge.
Abstract: There is disclosed a paddle switch operated by pushing on the lower portion of a rocker paddle to turn the switch “on” or “off”. The lower edge of the paddle pivots in and out about its upper edge. The switch includes articulated driver means coupled to be driven by the rocker paddle when it is depressed and to urge the rocker paddle back to its out position. When the rocker paddle is pushed in, it urges the articulated driver means to rotate a cam means in a first, clock wise direction, or a second, counter clockwise direction. Alternate rotation of the cam drives a slider member having a cam follower back and forth along a linear axis. A shaped leaf spring cooperates with the cam follower to assist in the movement of the slider and to determine its rest positions. An indicator such as an LED is used to indicate the state of conduction of the switch. When the rocker paddle is released, it is biased by the articulated drive means to pivot back to its initial position. The rocker paddle of the switch is not located within a frame and has surface along its vertical axis of positive first differential and zero second differential, comprised of a combination of splines which extend between points of varying distances from a datum plane. This surface has zero second differential when the rate of height increase of individual splines is constant.

Abstract: The Solar Array Paddle generation power of ADEOS-II satellite dropped suddenly. We have investigated the cause of the anomaly. The telemetry indicated the generation power dropped by 2 A-step. This corresponded in the generation power of each array circuit. No anomalous telemetry was found except for attitude when the anomaly occurred. FTA was carried out and the possible locations for the anomaly were identified; Solar Array Paddle or Solar Array Paddle Harness. The laboratory tests showed the possibility that sustained arcs occurred between harnesses and the heat produced by arcs destroyed the bundled harnesses.
