TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the role of driver inattention in rear-end crashes and crossing path intersection crashes and found that driver distraction, in particular driver distraction involving a diversion of gaze from the forward roadway, was the dominating factor contributing to the rear end crashes.
Abstract: The general objective of the present analysis was to investigate the role of driver inattention in rear-end crashes and crossing path intersection crashes. To this end, a set of 133 naturalistic crashes (70 rear-end and 63 intersection crashes), obtained by means of the DriveCam on-board safety monitoring (OBSM) system, were analyzed based on a novel methodology for assigning and aggregating crash-contributing factors. The analysis focused on rear-end crashes where the OBSM-instrumented vehicle was striking a lead vehicle and crossing-path intersection crashes where the driver of the instrumented vehicle intended to proceed straight through the intersection. It was found that driver inattention, in particular driver distraction involving a diversion of gaze from the forward roadway, was the dominating factor contributing to the rear-end crashes. Although driver inattention also contributed to the intersection crashes, the patterns of contributing factors for this crash type were quite different compared to the rear-end crashes. In particular, in the intersection crashes, visual occlusion and insufficient selection of safety margins were identified as key contributing factors. Cognitively distracting activities that did not involve a diversion of gaze from the forward roadway, such as cell phone conversation, did not contribute frequently to avoidance failures for any of the crash types. The present results show that the role of driver inattention as a crash-contributing factor depends strongly on the type of crash. They also support previous findings from naturalistic driving studies that visual diversion from the forward roadway is the key mechanism by which inattention leads to rear-end crashes.

TL;DR: The fault tree model of the train rear-end collision accident has been proposed based on the explicit modeling method and the result shows that common cause failure has significant influences on the system reliability.
Abstract: Along with the development of modern design technology and the increasing complication of modern engineering systems, component dependency has become a universal phenomenon during the failure analysis of systems. Ignoring the dependency among the failure behaviors of system components may lead to a huge error or even yield faulty results. In this paper, three types of models and two kinds of modeling methods are introduced for solving the common cause failure issues. The fault tree model of the train rear-end collision accident has been proposed based on the explicit modeling method. The probability of occurrence of the train rear-end collision accident is calculated using the square root model. The result shows that common cause failure has significant influences on the system reliability.

TL;DR: In this paper, a rear-end collision real-time prediction method aimed at a frequently jammed section of an expressway is presented, where a traffic flow detector is installed on the expressway (generally the upstream section of a bottleneck area).
Abstract: The invention discloses a rear-end collision real-time prediction method aimed at a frequently jammed section of an expressway. Firstly, a traffic flow detector used for collecting real-time traffic flow data of all sections of the expressway is installed on the expressway (generally the upstream section of a bottleneck area). When a rear-end collision occurs, vehicle following running tracks are analyzed, a rear-end collision risk real-time prediction logistic model of the frequently jammed section of the expressway is built, and model parameters are calibrated according to traffic flow data by five minutes before the collision occurs. The method overcomes the defect that effective real-time prediction of the rear-end collision of frequently jammed section of the expressway cannot be conducted in the past, rear-end collision risks can be estimated in real time according to the traffic data collected by the traffic flow detector on the expressway, and moreover, dynamic traffic control is utilized to control and prevent the rear-end collision. Abstract: Rear-end collision is one of the most frequent accidents occurring on roadways. This chapter investigates how vehicle’s local parameters in a platoon of cars (i.e., perception and information collection, vehicle speed, safe distance, braking parameters) affect the global behavior of the traffic system in terms of rear-end collision avoidance (CA). In fact, microscopic car following models capture the tactical maneuvering decisions of drivers, in order to maintain a safe distance and avoid collision with the lead vehicles. Furthermore, the chapter describes how vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless communication networks can be used in preventing rear-end collisions. Finally, as an example, the design and evaluation of an adaptive inter-vehicle CA communication protocol is provided. This protocol is capable of maintaining high reliability and efficiency in the face of large variations in vehicular traffic and wireless network conditions.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for reducing damage to a vehicle at a rear-end collision, which absorbs impact energy due to a rear-end collision between a vehicle and another vehicle by cushioning, and prevents or reduces damages at the rear-end collision.SOLUTION: A shock absorber 11, which can be extended and contracted between a deployment position where it protrudes rearward beyond the rear end of a vehicle 1 and a storage position forward of the deployment position, is fixed between a rear underrun protector (RUP) 4 and an RUP bracket 5. When another vehicle collides with the vehicle 1 from the rear and load is input to the RUP 4, the shock absorber 11 is contracted forward and absorbs the impact energy of a rear-end collision by cushioning. TL;DR: A new model to avoid rear-end collisions is proposed that considers the braking performance of the host vehicle and the motion state of the heading vehicle, and keeps a short relative distance that improves road efficiency.
Abstract: Rear-end collisions of low speed vehicles on the urban road are common accident scenarios. A judgment of safety distance is a crucial part of a rear-end collision avoidance system which relies on safety distance model. In order to solve the problems of traditional safety distance models, this paper proposes a new model to avoid rear-end collisions. The new model considers the braking performance of the host vehicle and the motion state of the heading vehicle. Then a rear-end collision avoidance system including the new model is established using a combination of CarSim with Simulink software. Three typical working conditions through the co-simulation is simulated for verifying the model. Simulation results show that the new model ensures rear-end collision can be avoided, meanwhile keeping a short relative distance that improves road efficiency.

Abstract: To predict the real-time collision risk for rear-end crashes at freeway recurrent bottlenecks,in this study, the features of trajectories of individual vehicles when encountering kinematic waves were investigated, the collision conditions were analyzed, aggregate analysis of the trajectories of multiple vehicles was conducted. Then a model to predict the collision risks was developed using aggregated traffic flow data. Results show that the rear-end collision probability during propagation of kinematic waves was significantly related to the collision risk index and standard deviation of upstream occupancy. The model was used to predict the collisions in the bottleneck section of a real-world freeway;the predictions were consistent with observations. The highest collision risk occurs when traffic changes from free-flow to congested states. The propagation of kinematic waves in congested traffic also increases the rear-end collision risk.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show a preventive approach that can contribute to lessening the consequences of a crash by creating an optimum interaction of measures in the fields of primary and secondary safety.
Abstract: The utilisation of secondary safety systems to protect occupants has attained a very high level over the past decades. Further improvements are still possible, but increasingly minor progress is only to be obtained with a high degree of effort. Thus, a key aspect must be the impact to overall safety in an accident. If reliable information is available on an imminent crash, measures already taken in the pre-crash phase can result in a significantly great influence on the outcomes of the crash. With this background preventive measures are the key to a sustainable further reduction of the figures of crash victims on our roads. This paper aims to show a preventive approach that can contribute to lessening the consequences of a crash by creating an optimum interaction of measures in the fields of primary and secondary safety. To further enhance vehicle safety, driver assistant systems are already available that warn the driver of an imminent front-to-rear-end crash. The next step is to support him in his reactions or if he fails to react sufficiently, to even initiate an automatic braking when the crash becomes unavoidable. Automatic pre-crash braking can, in an ideal situation, fully prevent a crash or can significantly reduce the impact speed and thus the impact energy (and the severity of the accident). If a vehicle is being braked in the pre-crash phase, the occupants are already being pre-stressed by the deceleration. The information available about the imminent crash can be used to activate the belt tensioners and likewise other secondary safety systems in the vehicle right before the impact. The pre-crash deceleration also causes the front of the vehicle to dip. Conventional crash tests do not take this specific impact situation into consideration. This is why, for example, the influences of the pre-crash displacements of the occupants are not recorded in the test results. Furthermore, a reproducible representation of the benefit of the vehicle safety systems which prepare the occupants for the imminent impact is not possible. In order to demonstrate the functions of automated pre-crash braking and to investigate the differences during the impact as a consequence of the altered occupant positions as well as the initiation of force and deformations of the vehicle front, DEKRA teamed up with BMW to carry out a joint crash test with the latest BMW 5 series vehicle. It involved the vehicle braking automatically from a starting test speed of 64 km/h (corresponding to the impact speed set by Euro NCAP) down to 40 km/h. The test was still run by the intelligent drive system of the crash test facility. This required several modifications to be made to the test facility as well as to the vehicle. The paper will describe and discuss some relevant results of the crash test. In addition, the possible benefits of such systems will also be considered. The test supplemented the work of the vFSS working group (vFSS stands for Advanced Forward-looking Safety Systems). TL;DR: The rear-end collision prevention intervention belt as discussed by the authors consists of a base plate, where concavo-convex points are uniformly distributed on the base plate and reflection layers are arranged on the concave points, and when other vehicles arrive, the device warns drivers through the physical contact between the device and the running vehicles.
Abstract: The invention relates to a rear-end collision prevention intervention belt, and belongs to the field of roadway safety facilities. The rear-end collision prevention intervention belt comprises a base plate (1), wherein a plurality of concavo-convex points (2) are uniformly distributed on the base plate (1), and reflection layers are arranged on the concavo-convex points (2). When a vehicle is out of order and forced to stop on the high way, as long as the device is taken out to be put within a safe distance behind the vehicle, when other vehicles arrive, the device warns drivers through the physical contact between the device and the running vehicles. Particularly, during a long drive or fatigue driving, the general alarm warming probably does not have strong effectiveness, but the vehicle bumpiness generated by the physical contact can allow the drivers to quickly regain consciousness, and therefore accidents are prevented.
