TL;DR: In this paper, the authors carried out a numerical "scattering experiment," placing an acoustic driver 4 Mm below the solar surface and monitoring the acoustic and Alfvenic wave energy flux high in an isothermal atmosphere placed above it.
Abstract: The efficacy of fast – slow MHD mode conversion in the surface layers of sunspots has been demonstrated over recent years using a number of modelling techniques, including ray theory, perturbation theory, differential eigensystem analysis, and direct numerical simulation. These show that significant energy may be transferred between the fast and slow modes in the neighbourhood of the equipartition layer where the Alfven and sound speeds coincide. However, most of the models so far have been two dimensional. In three dimensions the Alfven wave may couple to the magnetoacoustic waves with important implications for energy loss from helioseismic modes and for oscillations in the atmosphere above the spot. In this paper, we carry out a numerical “scattering experiment,” placing an acoustic driver 4 Mm below the solar surface and monitoring the acoustic and Alfvenic wave energy flux high in an isothermal atmosphere placed above it. These calculations indeed show that energy conversion to upward travelling Alfven waves can be substantial, in many cases exceeding loss to slow (acoustic) waves. Typically, at penumbral magnetic field strengths, the strongest Alfven fluxes are produced when the field is inclined 30° – 40° from the vertical, with the vertical plane of wave propagation offset from the vertical plane containing field lines by some 60° – 80°.

Abstract: In this paper, a new concept of a wall-climbing robot able to climb a vertical plane is presented. A continuous locomotive motion with a high climbing speed of 15m/min is realized by adopting a series chain on two tracked wheels on which 24 suction pads are installed. While each tracked wheel rotates, the suction pads which attach to the vertical plane are activated in sequence by specially designed mechanical valves. The engineering analysis and detailed mechanism design of the tracked wheel, including mechanical valves and the overall features, are described in this paper. It is a self-contained robot in which a vacuum pump and a power supply are integrated and is controlled remotely. The climbing performance, using the proposed mechanism, is evaluated on a vertical steel plate. Finally, the procedures are presented for an optimization experiment using Taguchi methodology to maximize vacuum pressure which is a critical factor for suction force.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance light extraction efficiency and front luminance, in a light emitting device in which light from a light emitting element is emitted from a transparent substrate to its front. SOLUTION: The light emitting surface of the transparent glass substrate in this light emitting device has a recessed and projecting structure formed by including a vertical plane almost in parallel with the direction normal to the surface of the light emitting surface and a horizontal plane in parallel with the light emitting surface. For example, a plurality of transparent protrusions 1 are arranged on the light emitting surface, its side wall face 1a forms the vertical plane, and its upper end face 1b and gap face 1c form the horizontal plane. Alternatively, a plurality of recessed parts 2 are arranged to form the light emitting surface, the side wall face 2a of theirs forms the vertical plane, and the bottom face 2b and gap face 2c of theirs form the horizontal plane. Then, light emitted from a light emitting element (not illustrated) disposed in the lower part of the illustration is collimated in the direction normal to the surface of the light emitting surface by the vertical plane, although it is a part of the light. TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed the use of a 2nd smaller crab cavity in the vertical plane in order to cancel this effect and investigate its use in numerical simulations, which can cause significant unwanted effects in accelerators with small vertical beam sizes and large beam-beam effects.
Abstract: Many particle accelerators are proposing the use of crab cavities to correct for accelerator crossing angles or for the production of short bunches in light sources. These cavities produce a rotation to the bunch in a well-defined polarization plane. If the plane of the rotation does not align with the horizontal axis of the accelerator, the bunch will receive a small amount of spurious vertical bunch rotation. For accelerators with small vertical beam sizes and large beam-beam effects, this can cause significant unwanted effects. In this paper we propose the use of a 2nd smaller crab cavity in the vertical plane in order to cancel this effect and investigate its use in numerical simulations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reveal a tiny inclining angle measuring apparatus, which comprises a shell, a gravity pendulum, a wheel train and a reading device, which can measure the levelness of the surface of the measured object on two orthogonal directions.
Abstract: The invention discloses a tiny inclining angle measuring apparatus, which comprises a shell, a gravity pendulum, a wheel train and a reading device; the main drive shaft of the wheel train is installed on the shell and is parallel to the bottom surface of the shell, and the gravity pendulum and the main drive wheel of the wheel train are connected into whole; when the tiny inclining angle measuring apparatus inclines, the gravity pendulum drives the whole wheel train to rotate, which can make the bottom surface of the shell vertical to the central line of the tested vertical shaft and also can make the bottom surface of the shell vertical to the tested proximate vertical plane and crossed with the horizontal line parallel to the main drive shaft; the reading device can display the rotating angle of a driven shaft enlarged by the wheel train. Two sets of a device which are composed of the wheel train, the gravity pendulum and the reading device with the above function are installed in the shell. The main drive shafts of the two wheel trains are vertical with each other and both are parallel to the bottom surface of the shell. The tiny inclining angle measuring apparatus has simple structure, which doesn't need to rotate the tested shaft when measuring the inclining angle of the vertical rotating axle, and simultaneously, it can measure the levelness of the surface of the measured object on two orthogonal directions. Besides, the invention doesn't need to add cushion, which is superior to the frame level.

Abstract: An approximate theory is constructed to describe quasi-two-dimensional viscous incompressible flows This theory takes into account a weak circulation in the vertical plane and the related divergence of the two-dimensional velocity field The role of the nonlinear terms that are due to the interaction between the vortex and potential components of velocity and the possibility of taking into account the corresponding effects in the context of the concept of bottom friction are analyzed It is shown that the nonlinear character of friction is a consequence of the three-dimensional character of flow, which results in the effective interaction of vortices with vertical and horizontal axes An approximation of the effect of this interaction in quasi-two-dimensional equations is obtained with the use of the coefficient of nonlinear friction The results based on this approximation are compared to the data of laboratory experiments on the excitation of a spatially periodic fluid flow

Abstract: The results of studying the precedence effect in the case where the direct and delayed (reflected) signals are located in the vertical and horizontal planes are considered. Loudspeakers emitting direct and reflected sounds were placed 45 deg to the left and right of the median line of the subject’s head in the horizontal plane and in front of and above the subject’s head, i.e., with 0 and 90 deg of elevation relative to the eye level, in the vertical plane. It has been shown that the time limits of the precedence effect of short (5-ms) signals are similar in the horizontal and vertical planes. For signals more than 10 ms in duration, the values of echo thresholds were higher in the vertical plane and significantly differed (p < 0.05) from the thresholds in the horizontal plane.
