The combination of seven-year data from WMAP and improved astrophysical data rigorously tests the standard cosmological model and places new constraints on its basic parameters and extensions. By combining the WMAP data with the latest distance measurements from the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the distribution of galaxies and the Hubble constant (H0) measurement, we determine the parameters of the simplest six-parameter ΛCDM model. The power-law index of the primordial power spectrum is ns = 0.968 ± 0.012 (68% CL) for this data combination, a measurement that excludes the Harrison–Zel’dovich–Peebles spectrum by 99.5% CL. The other parameters, including those beyond the minimal set, are also consistent with, and improved from, the five-year results. We find no convincing deviations from the minimal model. The seven-year temperature power spectrum gives a better determination of the third acoustic peak, which results in a better determination of the redshift of the matter-radiation equality epoch. Notable examples of improved parameters are the total mass of neutrinos, � mν < 0.58 eV (95% CL), and the effective number of neutrino species, Neff = 4.34 +0.86 −0.88 (68% CL), which benefit from better determinations of the third peak and H0. The limit on a constant dark energy equation of state parameter from WMAP+BAO+H0, without high-redshift Type Ia supernovae, is w =− 1.10 ± 0.14 (68% CL). We detect the effect of primordial helium on the temperature power spectrum and provide a new test of big bang nucleosynthesis by measuring Yp = 0.326 ± 0.075 (68% CL). We detect, and show on the map for the first time, the tangential and radial polarization patterns around hot and cold spots of temperature fluctuations, an important test of physical processes at z = 1090 and the dominance of adiabatic scalar fluctuations. The seven-year polarization data have significantly improved: we now detect the temperature–E-mode polarization cross power spectrum at 21σ , compared with 13σ from the five-year data. With the seven-year temperature–B-mode cross power spectrum, the limit on a rotation of the polarization plane due to potential parity-violating effects has improved by 38% to Δα =− 1. 1 ± 1. 4(statistical) ± 1. 5(systematic) (68% CL). We report significant detections of the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect at the locations of known clusters of galaxies. The measured SZ signal agrees well with the expected signal from the X-ray data on a cluster-by-cluster basis. However, it is a factor of 0.5–0.7 times the predictions from “universal profile” of Arnaud et al., analytical models, and hydrodynamical simulations. We find, for the first time in the SZ effect, a significant difference between the cooling-flow and non-cooling-flow clusters (or relaxed and non-relaxed clusters), which can explain some of the discrepancy. This lower amplitude is consistent with the lower-than-theoretically expected SZ power spectrum recently measured by the South Pole Telescope Collaboration.

Seven-year wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (wmap *) observations: cosmological interpretation

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will provide the data to support detailed investigations of the distribution of luminous and nonluminous matter in the universe: a photometrically and astrometrically calibrated digital imaging survey of π sr above about Galactic latitude 30° in five broad optical bands to a depth of g' ~ 23 mag, and a spectroscopic survey of the approximately 106 brightest galaxies and 105 brightest quasars found in the photometric object catalog produced by the imaging survey. This paper summarizes the observational parameters and data products of the SDSS and serves as an introduction to extensive technical on-line documentation.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Technical summary

We introduce a stable, well tested Python implementation of the affine-invariant ensemble sampler for Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) proposed by Goodman & Weare (2010). The code is open source and has already been used in several published projects in the astrophysics literature. The algorithm behind emcee has several advantages over traditional MCMC sampling methods and it has excellent performance as measured by the autocorrelation time (or function calls per independent sample). One major advantage of the algorithm is that it requires hand-tuning of only 1 or 2 parameters compared to ~N2 for a traditional algorithm in an N-dimensional parameter space. In this document, we describe the algorithm and the details of our implementation. Exploiting the parallelism of the ensemble method, emcee permits any user to take advantage of multiple CPU cores without extra effort. emcee: The MCMC Hammer

We present cosmological parameter constraints based on the final nine-year WMAP data, in conjunction with a number of additional cosmological data sets. The WMAP data alone, and in combination, continue to be remarkably well fit by a six-parameter CDM model. When WMAP data are combined with measurements of the high-l cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale, and the Hubble constant, the matter and energy densities, bh 2 , ch 2 , and , are each determined to a precision of 1.5%. The amplitude of the primordial spectrum is measured to within 3%, and there is now evidence for a tilt in the primordial spectrum at the 5 level, confirming the first detection of tilt based on the five-year WMAP data. At the end of the WMAP mission, the nine-year data decrease the allowable volume of the six-dimensional CDM parameter space by a factor of 68,000 relative to pre-WMAP measurements. We investigate a number of data combinations and show that their CDM parameter fits are consistent. New limits on deviations from the six-parameter model are presented, for example: the fractional contribution of tensor modes is limited to r < 0.13 (95% CL); the spatial curvature parameter is limited to k = 0.0027 +0.0039 0.0038 ; the summed mass of neutrinos is limited to P m < 0.44 eV (95% CL); and the number of relativistic species is found to lie within Ne = 3.84±0.40, when the full data are analyzed. The joint constraint on Ne and the primordial helium abundance, YHe, agrees with the prediction of standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We compare recent Planck measurements of the Sunyaev‐Zel’dovich eect with our seven-year measurements, and show their mutual agreement. Our analysis of the polarization pattern around temperature extrema is updated. This confirms a fundamental prediction of the standard cosmological model and provides a striking illustration of acoustic oscillations and adiabatic initial conditions in the early universe. Cas A was observed with the imaging detectors on the Einstein X-ray Observatory. The mass of the expanding shell due to the interaction of the blast wave and the ambient medium is determined. This indicates that Cas A is probably not in the free expansion phase, but has not yet reached the adiabatic phase of expansion. Detailed comparison of X-ray, optical, and radio images shows various degrees of correlation, indicating that several processes for emission are present. An upper limit of 1,500,000 K is established for any stellar remnant that is below the expected temperature of a neutron star by a factor of about 5. The total mass of the SNR is found to be 10-30 solar masses

High-resolution X-ray observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant with the Einstein Observatory

We present an improved method for predicting the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect in galaxy clusters from spatially-resolved, spectroscopic X-ray data. Using the deprojected electron density and temperature profiles measured within a fraction of the virial radius, and assuming a Navarro, Frenk & White (1995) mass model, we show how the pressure profile of the X-ray gas can be extrapolated to large radii, allowing the Comptonization parameter profile for the cluster to be predicted precisely. We apply our method to Chandra observations of three X-ray luminous, dynamically relaxed clusters with published SZ data: RX J1347.5-1145, Abell 1835 and Abell 478. Combining the predicted and observed SZ signals, we determine improved estimates for the Hubble constant from each cluster and obtain a weighted mean of H_0=69\pm8km/s/Mpc for a cosmology with Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7. This result is in good agreement with independent findings from the Hubble Key Project and the combination of cosmic microwave background and galaxy cluster data.

An improved approach to measuring H_0 using X-ray and SZ observations of galaxy clusters

We report on Chandra observations of the bright ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source in NGC 3921. Previous
XMM-Newton observations reported in the literature show the presence of a bright ULX at a 0.5–10 keV luminosity
of 2 × 1040 erg s−1. Our Chandra observation finds the source at a lower luminosity of ≈8 × 1039 erg s−1;
furthermore, we provide a Chandra position of the ULX accurate to 0.
7 at 90% confidence. The X-ray variability
makes it unlikely that the high luminosity is caused by several separate X-ray sources. In three epochs of archival
Hubble Space Telescope observations, we find a candidate counterpart to the ULX. There is direct evidence for
variability between the two epochs of WFPC2 F814W observations with the observation obtained in 2000 showing
a brighter source. Furthermore, converting the 1994 F336W and 2000 F300W WFPC2 and the 2010 F336W WFC3
observations to the Johnson U-band filter assuming a spectral type of O7I, we find evidence for a brightening of
the U-band light in 2000. Using the higher resolution WFC3 observations, we resolve the candidate counterpart
into two sources of similar color. We discuss the nature of the ULX and the probable association with the optical
counterpart(s). Finally, we investigate a potential new explanation for some (bright) ULXs as the decaying stages
of flares caused by the tidal disruption of a star by a recoiled supermassive black hole. However, we find that there should be at most only one of such systems within z = 0.08.

The nature of the bright ulx x-2 in ngc 3921: a chandra position and hst candidate counterpart

Iron K\alpha emission from photoionized and optically thick material is observed in a variety of astrophysical environments including X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and possibly gamma-ray bursts. This paper presents calculations showing how the equivalent width (EW) of the Fe K line depends on the iron abundance of the illuminated gas and its ionization state -- two variables subject to significant cosmic scatter. Reflection spectra from a constant density slab which is illuminated with a power-law spectrum with photon-index \Gamma are computed using the code of Ross & Fabian. When the Fe K EW is measured from the reflection spectra alone, we find that it can reach values greater than 6 keV if the Fe abundance is about 10 times solar and the illuminated gas is neutral. EWs of about 1 keV are obtained when the gas is ionized. In contrast, when the EW is measured from the incident+reflected spectrum, the largest EWs are ~800 keV and are found when the gas is ionized. When \Gamma is increased, the Fe K line generally weakens, but significant emission can persist to larger ionization parameters. The iron abundance has its greatest impact on the EW when it is less than 5 times solar. When the abundance is further increased, the line strengthens only marginally. Therefore, we conclude that Fe K lines with EWs much greater than 800 eV are unlikely to be produced by gas with a supersolar Fe abundance. These results should be useful in interpreting Fe K emission whenever it arises from optically thick fluorescence.
