Human, Oceanographic and Habitat Drivers of Central and Western Pacific Coral Reef Fish Assemblages
Ivor D. Williams,Julia K. Baum,Adel Heenan,Adel Heenan,Katharine M. Hanson,Marc O. Nadon,Marc O. Nadon,Russell E. Brainard +7 more
TL;DR: This large-scale ecosystem monitoring program conducted by scientific divers over the course of >2,000 hours of underwater observation at 1,934 sites, across ~40 islands and atolls finds that coral reef areas do not all have equal ability to sustain large reef fish stocks, and that what is natural varies significantly amongst locations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coral reef ecology in the Anthropocene
Gareth J. Williams,Nicholas A. J. Graham,Jean-Baptiste Jouffray,Jean-Baptiste Jouffray,Albert V. Norström,Magnus Nyström,Jamison M. Gove,Adel Heenan,Lisa M. Wedding +8 more
TL;DR: It is argued that, although biophysical drivers still influence ecosystem structure and function at particular scales, their ability to offer predictive capacity over coupled social–ecological systems is increasingly compromised as the authors move further into the Anthropocene.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monitoring Herbivorous Fishes as Indicators of Coral Reef Resilience in American Samoa
Adel Heenan,Ivor D. Williams +1 more
TL;DR: Support is demonstrated for the use of functional groups of herbivores as indicators for resilience-based monitoring of coral reefs using data from 240 sites from five island groups in American Samoa.
Journal ArticleDOI
A climate-informed, ecosystem approach to fisheries management
Adel Heenan,Robert S. Pomeroy,Johann D. Bell,Philip L. Munday,William W. L. Cheung,Cheryl A. Logan,Russell E. Brainard,Affendi Yang Amri,Porfirio M. Aliño,Nygiel Armada,Laura T. David,R. Rivera-Guieb,Stuart J. Green,Jamaluddin Jompa,Teresa Leonardo,Samuel S Mamauag,Britt-Anne A. Parker,Janna M. Shackeroff,Zulfigar Yasin +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the benefits of using the framework for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) for dealing with the inevitable yet unclear impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on coastal fisheries are outlined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological Impacts of the 2015/16 El Niño in the Central Equatorial Pacific
Russell E. Brainard,Thomas A. Oliver,Michael J. McPhaden,Anne L. Cohen,Roberto Venegas,Adel Heenan,Bernardo Vargas-Ángel,Randi D. Rotjan,Sangeeta Mangubhai,Elizabeth Flint,Susan A. Hunter +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a special issue of the PMEL contribution no. 4698 with the purpose of providing guidance and support throughout the sub-submittal process.
