TL;DR: The first two months of the six-month study period were reported in this paper, where the overall mortality rate was 10.1% (71/702) and the final results of the CIAOW study will be published following the conclusion of the study period in March 2013.

Appendicectomy in older patients with acute appendicitis is not an indication for routine colonoscopy.
TL;DR: Until further evidence is available, a more selective approach in which only older patients with complicated appendicitis, mass lesion, or equivocal preoperative CT, and endoscopy-naive patients would undergo follow-up colonoscopy seems more appropriate.
