Journal ArticleDOI
Does bronchopulmonary dysplasia contribute to the occurrence of cerebral palsy among infants born before 28 weeks of gestation
Linda J. Van Marter,Karl C.K. Kuban,Elizabeth N. Allred,Carl L. Bose,Olaf Dammann,Michael O'Shea,Matthew M. Laughon,Richard A. Ehrenkranz,Michael D. Schreiber,Padmani Karna,Alan Leviton,Elgan Study Investigators +11 more
TL;DR: Combined treatment with both MV and supplemental oxygen at 36 weeks PMA strongly predicts the more common bilateral CP phenotypes, and BPD without MV at 36 Weeks PMA was not significantly associated with any form of CP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observer variability assessing US scans of the preterm brain: the ELGAN study
Karl C.K. Kuban,Ira Adler,Elizabeth N. Allred,Daniel G. Batton,Steven Bezinque,Bradford W. Betz,Ellen Cavenagh,Sara M. Durfee,Kirsten Ecklund,Kate A. Feinstein,Lynn A. Fordham,Frederick Hampf,Joseph Junewick,Robert L. Lorenzo,Roy G. K. McCauley,Cindy R. Miller,Joanna J. Seibert,Barbara Specter,Jacqueline Wellman,Sjirk J. Westra,Alan Leviton +20 more
TL;DR: Obtaining concordance seems to be an acceptable way to assure reasonably high-quality of images needed for clinical research.
Journal ArticleDOI
The breadth and type of systemic inflammation and the risk of adverse neurological outcomes in extremely low gestation newborns.
Karl C.K. Kuban,T. Michael O’Shea,Elizabeth N. Allred,Elizabeth N. Allred,Raina N. Fichorova,Raina N. Fichorova,Timothy Heeren,Nigel Paneth,Deborah Hirtz,Olaf Dammann,Alan Leviton,Alan Leviton +11 more
TL;DR: The risk of abnormal brain structure and function overall was increased among children who had recurrent and/or persistent elevations of the 25 proteins, and the risk of low Mental Development Index on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II, microcephaly, and a Child Behavior Checklist-defined attention problem increased with higher numbers of these recurrently and/ or persistently elevated proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammation, brain damage and visual dysfunction in preterm infants.
TL;DR: It is suggested that more experimental and epidemiological research is needed to elucidate mechanisms of infection/inflammation-induced damage to the eye and visual brain pathways of preterm infants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Parental smoking and risk of childhood brain tumors
Ellen B. Gold,Alan Leviton,Ricardo Lopez,Floyd H. Gilles,Tessa Hedley-Whyte,Laurence N. Kolonel,Joseph L. Lyon,G. Marie Swanson,Noel S. Weiss,Dee W. West,Carol Aschenbrener,Donald F. Austin +11 more
TL;DR: The findings and those from earlier studies provide no support for the hypothesis that parental cigarette smoking influences the risk of brain tumors in children.
