Journal ArticleDOI
Respiratory distress syndrome and intracranial hemorrhage: cause or association? Inferences from surfactant clinical trials.
TL;DR: Among preterm newborns, those with respiratory distress syndrome are at increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage and rapid infusion of buffer for treatment of acidosis was once thought to influence the risk of bleeding into the brain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early postnatal illness severity scores predict neurodevelopmental impairments at 10 years of age in children born extremely preterm.
J. W. Logan,Olaf Dammann,Olaf Dammann,Elizabeth N. Allred,Elizabeth N. Allred,Christiane E.L. Dammann,Kristyn S. Beam,Robert M. Joseph,Thomas M. O'Shea,Alan Leviton,Alan Leviton,Karl C.K. Kuban +11 more
TL;DR: Among very preterm newborns, physiologic derangements present in the first 12 postnatal hours are associated with dysfunctions in several neurodevelopmental domains at 10 years of age, and it is unable to make inferences about causality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk of Cranial Ultrasound Abnormalities in Very-low-birth-weight Infants Conceived With Assisted Reproductive Techniques
Jane E. Stewart,Elizabeth N. Allred,Elizabeth N. Allred,Margaret S. Collins,Margaret S. Collins,Jodi Abbott,Alan Leviton,Alan Leviton,Nigel Paneth,M.Lynne Reuss,Mervyn Susser,Thomas Hegyi,Mark Hiatt,Ulana Sanocka,Farrokh Shahrivar,Farrokh Shahrivar,Linda J. Van Marter,Linda J. Van Marter,Petra Banogan,Petra Banogan,David R. Genest,David R. Genest,Debra S. Heller,Susan Shen-Schwarz,Olaf Dammann,Olaf Dammann,Karl C K Kuban,Karl C K Kuban,Marcello Pagano,Marcello Pagano +29 more
TL;DR: Infants conceived with ART were less likely to have intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and twins and triplets had risks of cranial ultrasound abnormalities similar to those of singletons, but not at increased risk of these abnormalities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal exposure to N-nitrosatable drugs as a risk factor for childhood brain tumours
Susan E Carozza,Andrew F. Olshan,Elaine M. Faustman,Mary Jean Gula,Laurence N. Kolonel,Donald F. Austin,E Dee West,Noel S. Weiss,G. Marie Swanson,Joseph L. Lyon,Tessa Hedley-Whyte,Floyd H. Gilles,Carol Aschenbrener,Alan Leviton +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that no increased risk of childhood brain tumours was associated with maternal exposure to nitrosatable drugs and the study results should be viewed with caution given the imprecision of the point estimates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Etiologic heterogeneity of intracranial hemorrhages in preterm newborns
Alan Leviton,Alan Leviton,Marcello Pagano,Karl C. K. Kuban,Karl C. K. Kuban,Karl C. K. Kuban +5 more
TL;DR: The risk profiles of 3 groups of hemorrhages defined by location and time of occurrence were compared: early germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH), late GMH, and late peri/intraventricular hemorrhage excluding GMH.
