Journal ArticleDOI
N-Acetylcysteine as an antioxidant and disulphide breaking agent: the reasons why
Giancarlo Aldini,Alessandra Altomare,Giovanna Baron,Giulio Vistoli,Marina Carini,Luisa Borsani,Francesco Sergio +6 more
TL;DR: The disulphide breaking activity of NAC also explains its mucolytic activity which is due to its effect in reducing heavily cross-linked mucus glycoproteins and free thiols as well as reduced proteins which have important direct antioxidant activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Novel Therapeutic Strategy to Prevent Chemotherapy-Induced Persistent Sensory Neuropathy By TRPA1 Blockade
Gabriela Trevisan,Serena Materazzi,Camilla Fusi,Alessandra Altomare,Giancarlo Aldini,Maura Lodovici,Riccardo Patacchini,Pierangelo Geppetti,Romina Nassini +8 more
TL;DR: A key role for early activation/sensitization of TRPA1 by oxidative stress by-products in producing CIPN is highlighted and prevention strategies for CIPn in patients are suggested through the use of early, short-term treatments with TRPA 1 antagonists.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carnosine Attenuates the Development of both Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Nephropathy in BTBR ob/ob Mice
Thomas Albrecht,Maaike Schilperoort,Shiqi Zhang,Jana D. Braun,Jiedong Qiu,Angelica Rodriguez,Diego O. Pastene,Bernhard K. Krämer,Hannes Koppel,Hans J. Baelde,Emile de Heer,Alessandra Altomare,Luca Regazzoni,Alessandra Denisi,Giancarlo Aldini,Jacob van den Born,Benito A. Yard,Sibylle J. Hauske +17 more
TL;DR: Treatment with carnosine improves glucose metabolism, albuminuria and pathology in BTBR ob/ob mice, and could be a novel therapeutic strategy to treat patients with DN and/or be used to prevent DN in patients with diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protein lipoxidation: Detection strategies and challenges
Giancarlo Aldini,M. Rosário M. Domingues,Corinne M. Spickett,Pedro Domingues,Alessandra Altomare,Francisco J. Sánchez-Gómez,Clara L. Oeste,Dolores Pérez-Sala +7 more
TL;DR: An update on methods to approach the complex field of lipoxidation along with validation strategies and functional assays illustrated with well-studied lipoxidized proteins or peptides is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
A carnosine intervention study in overweight human volunteers: bioavailability and reactive carbonyl species sequestering effect
Luca Regazzoni,Barbora de Courten,Davide Garzon,Alessandra Altomare,Cristina Marinello,Michaela Jakubova,Silvia Vallova,Patrik Krumpolec,Marina Carini,Jozef Ukropec,Barbara Ukropcova,Barbara Ukropcova,Giancarlo Aldini +12 more
TL;DR: Data suggest that acrolein is entrapped in vivo by carnosine although the response to its supplementation is possibly influenced by individual diversities in terms of carnosines dietary intake, metabolism and basal production of reactive carbonyl species.
