Journal ArticleDOI
Viral load criteria and threshold optimization to improve HIV incidence assay characteristics.
Reshma Kassanjee,Reshma Kassanjee,Christopher D. Pilcher,Michael P. Busch,Gary Murphy,Shelley N. Facente,Sheila M. Keating,Elaine Mckinney,Kara Marson,Matthew Price,Matthew Price,Jeffrey N. Martin,Susan J. Little,Frederick Hecht,Esper G. Kallas,Alex Welte +15 more
TL;DR: The potential for optimizing recent infection testing algorithms (RITAs), by introducing viral load criteria and tuning thresholds used to dichotomize quantitative measures, is explored in this paper. But, the potential of RITAs is limited by their inability to simultaneously achieve large mean durations of'recent' infection (MDRIs) and low 'false-recent' rates (FRRs), particularly in virally suppressed persons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of HIV transfusion transmission risk in South Africa: a 10-year analysis following implementation of individual donation nucleic acid amplification technology testing and donor demographics eligibility changes.
Marion Vermeulen,Nico Lelie,Charl Coleman,Wendy Sykes,Genevieve Jacobs,Ronel Swanevelder,Michael P. Busch,Gert U. van Zyl,Gert U. van Zyl,Eduard Grebe,Alex Welte,Ravi Reddy +11 more
TL;DR: The change in donor base demographics, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) detection rates, and transfusion‐transmissible HIV risk is described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Strengthening HIV surveillance in the antiretroviral therapy era: rationale and design of a longitudinal study to monitor HIV prevalence and incidence in the uMgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Ayesha B. M. Kharsany,Cherie Cawood,David Khanyile,Anna Christina. Grobler,Lyle R. McKinnon,Natasha Samsunder,Janet A. Frohlich,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Adrian Puren,Alex Welte,Gavin George,Kaymarlin Govender,Carlos Toledo,Zawadi. Chipeta,Lycias. Zembe,Mary Glenshaw,Lorna. Madurai,Varough M. Deyde,Alfred Bere +18 more
TL;DR: The results from HIPSS will provide critical data regarding HIV prevalence and incidence in this community and will establish whether HIV prevention and treatment efforts in a “real world”, non-trial setting have an impact on HIV incidence at a population level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Short Communication: Defining optimality of a test for recent infection for HIV incidence surveillance.
TL;DR: A fundamental shift from conventional thinking about test performance is needed: away from metrics relevant in typical public health settings where the detection of a condition in individuals is of primary interest and toward metrics that are appropriate when estimating a population-level parameter such as incidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of antibody biomarkers of long term and recent dengue virus infections.
Eduardo J. M. Nascimento,James Huleatt,Marli Tenório Cordeiro,Priscila M. S. Castanha,James K. George,Eduard Grebe,Alex Welte,Monique Brown,Donald S. Burke,Ernesto T. A. Marques,Ernesto T. A. Marques +10 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that anti-dengue NS1-specific IgG and IgG3 are potential biomarkers of long-term and recent DENV infections, respectively.
