Caffeine acts through neuronal adenosine A2A receptors to prevent mood and memory dysfunction triggered by chronic stress
Manuella P. Kaster,Manuella P. Kaster,Nuno J. Machado,Henrique B. Silva,Ana Nunes,Ana Paula Ardais,Ana Paula Ardais,Magda M. Santana,Younis Baqi,Younis Baqi,Christa E. Müller,Ana Lúcia S. Rodrigues,Lisiane O. Porciúncula,Jiang-Fan Chen,Ângelo R. Tomé,Paula Agostinho,Paula M. Canas,Rodrigo A. Cunha +17 more
TL;DR: It is shown that caffeine prevents the maladaptive changes caused by CUS in a manner mimicked by the selective blockade of adenosine A2A receptors (A2AR), suggesting A2AR as candidate targets to alleviate the consequences of chronic stress on brain function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adenosine A2A Receptors in the Amygdala Control Synaptic Plasticity and Contextual Fear Memory.
Ana Patrícia Simões,Nuno J. Machado,Nélio Gonçalves,Manuella P. Kaster,Ana Simões,Ana Nunes,Luís Pereira de Almeida,Ki Ann Goosens,Daniel Rial,Rodrigo A. Cunha +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that amygdala A2ARs control fear memory and the underlying process of synaptic plasticity in this brain region, which provides a neurophysiological basis for the association between A 2AR polymorphisms and phobia or panic attacks in humans and prompts a therapeutic interest in A2 ARs to manage fear-related pathologies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retinal texture biomarkers may help to discriminate between Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and healthy controls
Ana Nunes,Gilberto Silva,Cristina Duque,Cristina Januário,Isabel Santana,António F. Ambrósio,Miguel Castelo-Branco,Rui Bernardes +7 more
TL;DR: A significant amount of information discriminating between multiple neurodegenerative states is conveyed by OCT imaging of the human retina, even when differences in thickness are not yet present, which may allow for simultaneously diagnosing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Crosstalk Between ATP-P2X7 and Adenosine A2A Receptors Controlling Neuroinflammation in Rats Subject to Repeated Restraint Stress
Liliana Dias,Cátia R. Lopes,Francisco Q. Gonçalves,Ana Nunes,Daniela Pochmann,Nuno J. Machado,Angelo R. Tomé,Paula Agostinho,Rodrigo A. Cunha +8 more
TL;DR: The results provide the first demonstration of a functional interaction between P2X7R and A2AR controlling microglia reactivity likely involved in behavioral adaptive responses to stress and are illustrative of a cooperation between the two arms of the purinergic system in the control of brain function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Texture Analysis and its Applications in Biomedical Imaging: A Survey
TL;DR: Texture analysis describes a variety of image analysis techniques that quantify the variation in intensity and pattern as discussed by the authors, which can be used as a biomarker of disease onset and progression in biological tissues and organs.
