Comprehensive review of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water sources, their effects and treatments.

There are growing concerns about the increasing trends of emerging micropollutants in the environment due to their potential negative impacts on natural ecosystems and humans. This has attracted attention from both governmental and non-governmental organisations worldwide. Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine disruptors are continuously being released consciously or unconsciously into water sources due to poor regulatory frameworks especially in the developing countries. The effects of these contaminants are poorly known. They are not easily biodegradable and have become an environmental nuisance and public health issue. This has heightened the risk of exposure to their deleterious effects in such countries where the majority of the population are still struggling to have access to good quality drinking water supplies and better sanitation. With the rising fear of short- and long-term impacts of the ever-increasing number of persistent recalcitrant organic compounds accumulating in the environment, their removal is gradually becoming an issue to the water treatment industry. Hence, there is a need to develop functional techniques for the management of water contaminated by these emerging contaminants so as to increase the availability and access to safe and good-quality drinking water. We conducted a narrative review on these emerging micropollutants and examined their various documented sources, effects, as well as recent techniques for their effective removal. This becomes necessary due to the increasing occurrence of these pollutants in the aquatic and terrestrial environment. These levels are expected to further increase in the coming years as a consequence of the ever-increasing population density which undoubtedly characterizes developing economies. Our findings show that the present reported treatment techniques in the literature such as biological oxidation/biodegradation, coagulation/flocculation, ozonation, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, sedimentation, filtration, and activated carbon were not designed for removal of these newly identified contaminants, and as such, the techniques are not sufficient and unable to completely degrade the compounds. We therefore recommended the need for concerted efforts to develop better techniques, especially combined advanced oxidative methods to address the shortcomings of and growing challenge to current practices.

A Review of Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine-Disrupting Compounds: Sources, Effects, Removal, and Detections

High oxidation potential as well as other advantages over other tertiary wastewater treatments have led in recent years to a focus on the development of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). These radicals can be generated from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) through various activation methods such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation. This review manuscript aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the different methods for PS and PMS activaton, as well as the different applications of this technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Although its most widespread application is the elimination of micropollutants, its use for the disinfection of wastewater is gaining increasing interest. In addition, the possibility of combining this technology with ultrafiltration membranes to improve the water quality and lifespan of the membranes has also been discussed. Finally, a brief economic analysis of this technology has been undertaken and the different attempts made to implement it at full-scale have been summarized. As a result, this review tries to be useful for all those people working in that area.

Assessment of Sulfate Radical-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Water pollution through natural and anthro- pogenic activities has become a global problem causing short-and long-term impact on human and ecosystems. Substantial quantity of individual or mixtures of organic pollutants enter the surface water via point and nonpoint sources and thus affect the quality of freshwater. These pollutants are known to be toxic and difficult to remove by mere biological treatment. To date, most researches on the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater were based on the exploitation of individual treatment process. This single-treatment technology has inherent challenges and shortcomings with respect to efficiency andeconomics.Thus,applicationoftwoadvancedtreat- ment technologies characterized with high efficiency with respect to removal of primary and disinfection by-products in wastewater is desirable. This review article focuses on the application of integrated technol- ogies such as electrohydraulic discharge with heteroge- neous photocatalysts or sonophotocatalysis to remove target pollutants. The information gathered from more than 100 published articles, mostly laboratories studies, shows that process integration effectively remove and degrade recalcitrant toxic contaminants in wastewater better than single-technology processing. This review recommends an improvement on this technology (inte- grated electrohydraulic discharge with heterogeneous photocatalysts) viz-a-vis cost reduction in order to make it accessible and available in the rural and semi-urban settlement. Further recommendation includes develop- ment of an economic model to establish the cost impli- cations of the combined technology. Proper monitoring, enforcement of the existing environmental regulations, and upgrading of current wastewater treatment plants with additional treatment steps such as photocatalysis and ozonation will greatly assist in the removal of environmental toxicants.

Water is not only an economic, but also an increasingly important social commodity. Potable water is an essential resource for sustaining economic and social development in all sectors. A safe water supply and appropriate sanitation are the most essential components for a healthy and prosperous life. However, increases in human activities have led to exposure of the aqueous environment to chemical, microbial and biological pollutants as well as to micropollutants. Thus, liquid effluents containing toxic substances are generated by a variety of chemistry-related industrial processes, as well as by a number of common household or agricultural applications.

Application of Different Advanced Oxidation Processes for the Degradation of Organic Pollutants

H2O2-assisted photoelectrocatalytic degradation of Mitoxantrone using CuO nanostructured films: Identification of by-products and toxicity

ZnO nanorods were grown on silicon (Si) substrates by two techniques: (i) Chemical Bath Deposition (CBD) and (ii) a CBD seed layer combined with Carbothermal Reduction Vapor Phase Transport (CTR-VPT). The structured ZnO nanorods were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurments. The photoelectrochemical property of ZnO nanorods were analyzed by linear voltammetry under UV-ABC light excitation. Using the ZnO nanorod samples as photoanodes, the removal of methylene blue (MB) as a representative organic compound was studied by the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technique applying a potential (E) of 0.6 V. For comparison purposes, experiments were performed under the same conditions using photocatalysis (PC), direct photolysis and using samples of pure Si (support material) as working electrodes in PEC. XRD analyses of ZnO prepared by both methods showed the expected ZnO wurtzite phase and a preferred c-axial orientation in the growth of the nanorods. The presence of ZnO was further confirmed by XPS and contact angle measurements showed that ZnO grown by CBD (ZnO/CBD) had a slightly hydrophobic behavior while ZnO grown by CTR-VPT (ZnO/CTR-VPT) is hydrophilic. Both ZnO sample types were shown to be photoactive, with ZnO/CBD showing higher resultant photocurrent compared to ZnO/CTRVPT. For the degradation of MB 53% of the compound was removed using ZnO/CBD as a working electrode, while using the ZnO/CTR-VPT electrode led to a removal of 43% of MB. However, direct photolysis alone removed 39% of the MB. The lower removal of MB using ZnO/CTR-VPT samples was related to surface dissociation during the degradation process. The results show that ZnO nanorods prepared by the CBD techique are a promising photoelectrode for PEC applications. Our data also indicate that CTR-VPT-grown nanorods produce uniform nanorod arrays, but this uniform nanostructure deposit does not lead to any increase in PEC activity.
