Journal ArticleDOI
Antifungal Agents in Agriculture: Friends and Foes of Public Health
Verônica Soares Brauer,Caroline Patini Rezende,André Moreira Pessoni,Renato Graciano de Paula,Kanchugarakoppal S. Rangappa,Siddaiah Chandra Nayaka,Vijai Kumar Gupta,Fausto Almeida +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the use of antifungal agents in agriculture worldwide, the need to develop new ant-agents, and improvement of regulations regarding ant-drug use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Galectin-3 impacts Cryptococcus neoformans infection through direct antifungal effects
Fausto Almeida,Julie M. Wolf,Thiago Aparecido da Silva,Carlos M. DeLeon-Rodriguez,Caroline Patini Rezende,André Moreira Pessoni,Fabrício Freitas Fernandes,Rafael Silva-Rocha,Roberto Martinez,Marcio L. Rodrigues,Marcio L. Rodrigues,Maria Cristina Roque-Barreira,Arturo Casadevall +12 more
TL;DR: The protein Galectin-3 contributes to host defence against infection with the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans by inhibiting fungal growth and inducing lysis of fungal extracellular vesicles, which could benefit the host.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extracellular Vesicles from Aspergillus flavus Induce M1 Polarization In Vitro.
Verônica Soares Brauer,André Moreira Pessoni,Tamires Aparecida Bitencourt,Renato Graciano de Paula,Liliana O. Rocha,Gustavo H. Goldman,Fausto Almeida +6 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that A. flavus EVs play a crucial role in aspergillosis, priming the innate immune system to eliminate the fungal infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathogenic Allodiploid Hybrids of Aspergillus Fungi
Jacob L. Steenwyk,Abigail L. Lind,Laure Nicolas Annick Ries,Thaila Fernanda dos Reis,Lilian Pereira Silva,Fausto Almeida,Rafael Wesley Bastos,Thais Fernanda de Campos Fraga da Silva,Vania L. D. Bonato,André Moreira Pessoni,Fernando Rodrigues,Huzefa A. Raja,Sonja L. Knowles,Nicholas H. Oberlies,Katrien Lagrou,Gustavo H. Goldman,Antonis Rokas +16 more
TL;DR: Characterization of diverse infection-relevant traits showed that A. latus hybrid isolates are genomically and phenotypically heterogeneous but also differ from A.nidulans, A.spinulosporus, and A.quadrilineatus, suggesting that allodiploid hybridization contributes to the genomic and phenotypeic diversity of filamentous fungal pathogens of humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fungal Extracellular Vesicles as Potential Targets for Immune Interventions.
Mateus Silveira Freitas,Vânia Luiza Deperon Bonato,André Moreira Pessoni,Marcio L. Rodrigues,Marcio L. Rodrigues,Arturo Casadevall,Fausto Almeida +6 more
TL;DR: The immunomodulatory properties of EVs produced by pathogenic fungi are described and their potential as adjuvants for prophylactic or therapeutic strategies are discussed.
