Journal ArticleDOI
A new method to discriminate secondary organic aerosols from different sources using high-resolution aerosol mass spectra
M. F. Heringa,Peter F. DeCarlo,Peter F. DeCarlo,R. Chirico,R. Chirico,Torsten Tritscher,Michael Clairotte,Claudia Mohr,Claudia Mohr,Monica Crippa,Jay G. Slowik,L. Pfaffenberger,J. Dommen,Ernest Weingartner,André S. H. Prévôt,Urs Baltensperger +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, high-resolution mass spectra (HR-MS) showed that the dominant peaks in the MS, m/z 43 and 44, are dominated by the oxygenated ions C 2 H 3 O + and CO 2 +, similarly to the relatively fresh semi-volatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA) observed in the ambient aerosol.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fossil and non-fossil source contributions to atmospheric carbonaceous aerosols during extreme spring grassland fires in Eastern Europe
Vidmantas Ulevicius,Steigvilė Byčenkienė,Carlo Bozzetti,Athanasia Vlachou,Kristina Plauškaitė,Genrik Mordas,Vadimas Dudoitis,Gülcin Abbaszade,Vidmantas Remeikis,Andrius Garbaras,Agne Masalaite,Jan Blees,Roman Fröhlich,Kaspar Dällenbach,Francesco Canonaco,Jay G. Slowik,Josef Dommen,Ralf Zimmermann,Jürgen Schnelle-Kreis,Gary Salazar,Konstantinos Agrios,Sönke Szidat,Imad El Haddad,André S. H. Prévôt +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of biomass/grass burning on the evolution and composition of aerosol in Preila, Lithuania, during springtime open fires using an Aerodyne aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM).
Journal ArticleDOI
Particle-bound reactive oxygen species (PB-ROS) emissions and formation pathways in residential wood smoke under different combustion and aging conditions
Jun Zhou,Jun Zhou,Peter Zotter,Emily A. Bruns,Giulia Stefenelli,Deepika Bhattu,Samuel Brown,Samuel Brown,Amelie Bertrand,Amelie Bertrand,Nicolas Marchand,Houssni Lamkaddam,Jay G. Slowik,André S. H. Prévôt,Urs Baltensperger,Thomas Nussbaumer,Imad El-Haddad,Josef Dommen +17 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a suite of smog chamber and potential aerosol mass (PAM) chamber experiments were conducted under well-determined conditions for different combustion devices and technologies, different fuel types, operation methods, combustion regimes, and aging conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Constraining a hybrid volatility basis-set model for aging of wood-burning emissions using smog chamber experiments: a box-model study based on the VBS scheme of the CAMx model (v5.40)
Giancarlo Ciarelli,Giancarlo Ciarelli,Imad El Haddad,Emily A. Bruns,Sebnem Aksoyoglu,Ottmar Möhler,Urs Baltensperger,André S. H. Prévôt +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid volatility basis set (VBS) box model was used to simulate the aging of wood combustion aging experiments performed at different temperatures (263 and 288 K) in a ∼ 7m3 smog chamber.
Journal ArticleDOI
Equal abundance of summertime natural and wintertime anthropogenic Arctic organic aerosols
Vaios Moschos,Katja Dzepina,Deepika Bhattu,Houssni Lamkaddam,Roberto Casotto,Kaspar R. Daellenbach,Francesco Canonaco,Pragati Rai,Wenche Aas,Silvia Becagli,Giulia Calzolai,Konstantinos Eleftheriadis,Claire E. Moffett,Jürgen Schnelle-Kreis,Mirko Severi,Sangeeta Sharma,Henrik Skov,Mika Vestenius,Wendy Zhang,Hannele Hakola,Heidi Hellén,Lin Huang,Jean-Luc Jaffrezo,Andreas Massling,Jacob Klenø Nøjgaard,Tuukka Petäjä,Olga Popovicheva,Rebecca J. Sheesley,Rita Traversi,Karl Espen Yttri,Julia Schmale,André S. H. Prévôt,Urs Baltensperger,Imad El Haddad +33 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors used data from eight observatories that represent the entire Arctic to reveal the annual cycles in anthropogenic and biogenic sources of organic aerosol, mainly from Eurasia, which consist of both direct combustion emissions and long-range transported, aged pollution.
