Intramuscular interferon beta-1a for disease progression in relapsing multiple sclerosis
Lawrence Jacobs,Diane Cookfair,Richard A. Rudick,Robert M. Herndon,John R. Richert,Andres M. Salazar,J. S. Fischer,Donald E. Goodkin,Carl V. Granger,Jack H. Simon,John J. Alam,David M. Bartoszak,Dennis Bourdette,Jonathan Braiman,Carol M. Brownscheidle,Michael E. Coats,Stanley Cohan,David S. Dougherty,R. P. Kinkel,Michele Mass,Frederick Munschauer,Roger L. Priore,Patrick M. Pullicino,Barbara J. Scherokman,Bianca Weinstock-Guttman,Ruth H. Whitham +25 more
TL;DR: Interferon beta‐ la had a significant beneficial impact in relapsing multiple sclerosis patients by reducing the accumulation of permanent physical disability, exacerbation frequency, and disease activity measured by gadolinium‐enhanced lesions on brain magnetic resonance images.
Journal ArticleDOI
Frontal lobe injuries, violence, and aggression: A report of the Vietnam Head Injury Study
Jordan Grafman,Karen Schwab,Deborah L. Warden,Anthony Pridgen,Herbert R Brown,Andres M. Salazar +5 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that ventromedial frontal lobe lesions increase the risk of aggressive and violent behavior is supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quinolinic acid and kynurenine pathway metabolism in inflammatory and non-inflammatory neurological disease.
Melvyn P. Heyes,Kuniaki Saito,Jeffrey S. Crowley,L. E. Davis,M. A. Demitrack,M. Der,L. A. Dilling,J. Elia,M. J. P. Kruesi,Andrew A. Lackner,S. A. Larsen,K. Lee,H. L. Leonard,Sanford P. Markey,Alex Martin,S. Milstein,M. Maral Mouradian,M. R. Pranzatelli,Bonnie J. Quearry,Andres M. Salazar,M. Smith,S. E. Strauss,T. Sunderland,S. W. Swedo,W. W. Tourtellotte +24 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that inflammatory diseases are associated with accumulation of QUIN, kynurenic acid and L-kynurenine within the central nervous system, but that the available data do not support a role for QUIN in the aetiology of Huntington's disease or Alzheimer's disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quinolinic acid in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in HIV-1 infection: relationship to clinical and neurological status.
Melvyn P. Heyes,Bruce J. Brew,Alex Martin,Richard W. Price,Andres M. Salazar,John J. Sidtis,J. A. Yergey,M. Maral Mouradian,Abigail E. Sadler,John J. Keilp,David R. Rubinow,Sanford P. Markey +11 more
TL;DR: Analysis of the relationship between levels of quinolinic acid in the CSF and serum and integrity of the blood‐brain barrier, as measured by theCSF: serum albumin ratio, it appears that CSF levels are derived predominantly from intracerebral sources and perhaps from the serum.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epilepsy after penetrating head injury. I. Clinical correlates: a report of the Vietnam Head Injury Study.
TL;DR: Of 421 veterans who had penetrating brain wounds in Vietnam 15 years ago, 53% had posttraumatic epilepsy, and one-half of those still had seizures 15 years after injury, and Phenytoin therapy in the first year after injury did not prevent later seizures.
