Long-Term Use of a Left Ventricular Assist Device for End-Stage Heart Failure
Eric A. Rose,Annetine C. Gelijns,Alan J. Moskowitz,Daniel F. Heitjan,L.W. Stevenson,W Dembitsky,J W Long,D D Ascheim,Anita R. Tierney,R G Levitan,John T. Watson,P Meier,Nuala S. Ronan,P A Shapiro,Ronald M. Lazar,Leslie W. Miller,L Gupta,O.H. Frazier,Patrice Desvigne-Nickens,Mehmet C. Oz,V L Poirier +20 more
TL;DR: The use of a left ventricular assist device in patients with advanced heart failure resulted in a clinically meaningful survival benefit and an improved quality of life.
Journal ArticleDOI
The REMATCH trial: rationale, design, and end points
Eric A. Rose,Alan J. Moskowitz,Milton Packer,Josephine A. Sollano,Deborah L. Williams,Anita R. Tierney,Daniel F. Heitjan,Daniel F. Heitjan,Paul Meier,Deborah D. Ascheim,Ronald G Levitan,Alan D. Weinberg,Lynne Warner Stevenson,Peter A. Shapiro,Ronald M. Lazar,John T. Watson,Daniel J. Goldstein,Annetine C. Gelijns +17 more
TL;DR: The rationale for conducting REMATCH is discussed, the obstacles to designing this and other randomized surgical trials, the lessons learned in conducting the multicenter pilot study, and the features of the REMATCH study design are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Circulating interferon-α levels and hypertriglyceridemia in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
Carl Grunfeld,Carl Grunfeld,Donald P. Kotler,Donald P. Kotler,Judyy Kwan Shigenaga,Judyy Kwan Shigenaga,William T. Doerrler,William T. Doerrler,Anita R. Tierney,Anita R. Tierney,Jack Wang,Jack Wang,Richard N. Pierson,Richard N. Pierson,Kenneth R. Feingold,Kenneth R. Feingold +15 more
TL;DR: These studies suggest that interferon-α, which has previously been shown to modulate lipid metabolism in vivo and in vitro, may be responsible for the hypertriglyceridemia found in AIDS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Infection in permanent circulatory support: experience from the REMATCH trial.
William L. Holman,Soon J. Park,James W. Long,Alan D. Weinberg,Lopa Gupta,Anita R. Tierney,Robert M. Adamson,John D. Watson,Edward Raines,Gregory S. Couper,Francis D. Pagani,Nelson A. Burton,Leslie W. Miller,Yoshifumi Naka +13 more
TL;DR: Survival is improved with permanent LVAD implantation compared with OMM therapy, but infection causes substantial morbidity and mortality, and decreasing infections will increase survival and decrease morbidity in permanent LVad recipients and will improve the risk-benefit ratio for permanent LVADS therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neurological events during long-term mechanical circulatory support for heart failure: the Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance for the Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure (REMATCH) experience.
Ronald M. Lazar,Peter A. Shapiro,Brian E. Jaski,Michael K. Parides,Robert C. Bourge,John T. Watson,Laura Damme,Walter P. Dembitsky,Jeffrey D. Hosenpud,Lopa Gupta,Anita R. Tierney,Tonya Kraus,Yoshifumi Naka +12 more
TL;DR: Survival analysis combining stroke or death demonstrated a significant benefit for long-term circulatory support with an LVAD over medical therapy, and future trials will need to address prospectively all neurological outcomes, including neurocognitive function, and the role of long- term neuroprotection.
