A review of recycled aggregate in concrete applications (2000–2017)

There are number of water purification techniques but the adsorption is one of the most simplest, effective and economical method for wastewater purification. In this article a large number of solid adsorbents such as Natural adsorbents, Agricultural Wastes, Industrial wastes, Biomass, Nanoadsorbents: Carbon based nanomaterials, Nobel metal based nanomaterials, Metal oxide based nanomaterials, Spinel ferrite based nanomaterials, Nanocomposites, Dendritic polymers; Geopolymer cement have been discussed for the removal of different pollutants from waste water. Removal of Fluoride, Phosphate, Nitrate and Radionuclides from wastewater has also been reviewed in this article. Adsorption isotherm models, kinetic models, thermodynamic parameters and adsorption mechanism have also been discussed. The present article lists different type of adsorbents and reviews state-of-the-art of the removal of different pollutants from water. The efforts have been made to discuss the sources of contamination and toxicities of pollutants. Adsorption mechanisms responsible for pollutants removal by different adsorbents have been reviewed. Attempts have also been made to point out the advantages and drawbacks of adsorbents and the future research needs in the area of water purification by adsorbents.

The Changi East Reclamation Project in the Republic of Singapore comprises the ground improvement of marine clay with the installation of prefabricated vertical dra ins and subsequent preloading. Prior to the commenc ement of land reclamation works, a series of in situ tests were conducted under marine conditions with the help of various in situ testing equipment. The In Situ Testing Site was located in the northern part of t he project where the thickest compressible marine clay existed. The in situ tests carried out were with the field vane, piezoc one, flat dilatometer, self-boring pressuremeter and BAT permeameter. In situ tests were conducted to determine the undrained sh ear strength, overconsolidation ratio, soil stiffness a nd coefficient of consolidation and permeability of the marine clay. In situ dissipation tests provide a means of evaluating th e in situ coefficient of consolidation and hydraulic conducti vity due to horizontal flow of soft soil and were used t o estimate these properties of Singapore marine cla y at Changi. In order to allow for the future expansion of Chang i International Airport in Singapore, an additional 2000 hectares of land was reclaimed next to the existing airport. Th e shear strength, overconsolidation ratio, permeabi lity and consolidation properties of the soil in the horizon tal flow direction are important design parameters which need to be determined prior to reclamation. The determination of these design parameters are traditionally based on laboratory consolidation tests with the use of horizontally cu t samples. Results of these laboratory tests howeve r are usually subject to uncertainties primarily due to inevitabl e disturbance of the samples. In situ testing is an alternative to these traditional laboratory testing methods and furtherm ore the effect of disturbance to marine clays is mi nimal. In situ testing enables the undrained shear strength and ov erconsolidation ratio of the marine clay to be dete rmined at various levels. In situ dissipation tests can also be conducted at various levels in the marine clay to estimate the variatio n of the coefficient of consolidation and hydraulic conduct ivity due to horizontal flow with depth. The last t wo decades have seen an emergence of in situ testing methods as an alternative to laboratory te sting methods. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper are: 1) to describe the testing and a nalysis procedure for the various in situ tests; 2) to determine the undrained shear strength and overconsolidation rati o of Singapore marine clay at Changi prior to recla mation; 3) to determine the coefficient of consolidation due to h orizontal flow (C h) of Singapore marine clay prior to reclamation; 4) to determine the horizontal hydraulic conductivity (k h) of Singapore marine clay prior to reclamation; 5) To compare and discuss the results of the various in situ tests.

Pre-reclamation in situ testing of soft soil

The increase in generation of waste from construction activities along with significant increase in global population has led to increasing focus and research on reuse of waste material. In this paper, the application of construction and demolition (C&D) materials in road works is reviewed and discussed. C&D materials were evaluated by laboratory testing methods to assess their viability for reuse in roads and footpaths. Several unique field case studies where C&D materials have been used are also reported. C&D materials studied include recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), crushed brick (CB), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), fine recycled glass (FRG), and waste rock (WR). C&D materials were found to be suitable for road and footpath applications such as embankment fills, pavement base/subbase, and pipe bedding applications.

Sustainable Usage of Construction and Demolition Materials in Roads and Footpaths

Wood chips are generated from wood industries, particularly from furniture manufacturing The general reuse options are, however, currently limited to low-value applications Driven by the adverse impacts of climate change, with the aim of achieving more environmental sustainability through reducing waste and increasing reuse/recycle options, this study investigated the feasibility of using wood chips as a pipe backfilling and embankment fill material A laboratory assessment undertaken in this research shows that wood chips are suitable as a non-structural embankment fill material, but not as a pipe backfilling material This research also presents the environmental benefits of using wood chips in natural landscaping and the effects of filter depth in such applications It is found that wood chips significantly trap total suspended solids (TSS) and total nitrogen (TN), contributing to increased total phosphorus (TP) concentration As such the use of such material in urban landscaping should be subjective
