A review of recycled aggregate in concrete applications (2000–2017)

There are number of water purification techniques but the adsorption is one of the most simplest, effective and economical method for wastewater purification. In this article a large number of solid adsorbents such as Natural adsorbents, Agricultural Wastes, Industrial wastes, Biomass, Nanoadsorbents: Carbon based nanomaterials, Nobel metal based nanomaterials, Metal oxide based nanomaterials, Spinel ferrite based nanomaterials, Nanocomposites, Dendritic polymers; Geopolymer cement have been discussed for the removal of different pollutants from waste water. Removal of Fluoride, Phosphate, Nitrate and Radionuclides from wastewater has also been reviewed in this article. Adsorption isotherm models, kinetic models, thermodynamic parameters and adsorption mechanism have also been discussed. The present article lists different type of adsorbents and reviews state-of-the-art of the removal of different pollutants from water. The efforts have been made to discuss the sources of contamination and toxicities of pollutants. Adsorption mechanisms responsible for pollutants removal by different adsorbents have been reviewed. Attempts have also been made to point out the advantages and drawbacks of adsorbents and the future research needs in the area of water purification by adsorbents.

A review of waste products utilized as supplements to Portland cement in concrete

Generally pavement embankments constructed on soft subgrades requires an overlying working platform. The working platforms provided with granular materials of higher constriction sizes are highly susceptible to the formation of preferential flow path for the overlying embankment materials. Hence, the risk of contact erosion failure is higher at the interface of granular working platform material and the road embankment material below the pavement layers. This kind of contact erosion failure is often under estimated and requires a thorough investigation. Moreover, in the road embankment constructed with dispersive soil the contact erosion failure may be much more severe. In such case the finer particles of the embankment materials may get transported with a slow vertical ground water movement. Hence, this may lead to reduction in embankment stability and deformation on pavement structure. This kind of failures occurs in long term process and difficult to identify in early stage. Therefore, in order to study the long term deformation failure below the pavement layers, this paper investigates the contact erosion mechanism at the interface of granular working platform and the overlying dispersive soil layer under vertical ground water fluctuation. Here a new erosion test apparatus is developed with care to study the contact erosion mechanism below the pavement layers and experiments were conducted in a laboratory prototype-scale. The test results revealed that significant amount of settlement take place due to contact erosion failure at the pavement embankment foundation.

Deformation of pavement structure due to contact erosion failure below the pavement layers

The good functioning of metro systems in China is frequently hampered by recurring inundations induced by climate change This paper attempts to predict the inundation of metro systems by considering three scenarios of metro lines under different rainfall intensities, and utilizing the storm water management model (SWMM) incorporated into Geographic Information System (GIS) A prediction model is developed to simulate the scenario of rainfall intensities with 50-year, 100-year and 500-year in the urban area, and an equation is proposed to calculate the inundation depth of metro station The results show that the depth and range of waterlogging are similar for the three scenarios, but become more severe as rainfall intensity increases The results also show that the investigated metro station of Caobao Road and Shiguang Road will firstly experience inundations These inundations primarily occur along the Huangpu River and the regions located in its vicinity, which are characterized by the absence of drainage facilities The present study is bound to provide informative suggestions for both precaution and post-event flood risk assessment

Scenario-Based Inundation Analysis of Metro System in Urban Area of Shanghai

With the aim of reusing municipal sewage sludge, this paper presents the chemical and organic properties of sludge from a major sewage treatment plant in south–eastern Australia. The results show that the concentrations of all OCPs and majority of PAHs were below or close to laboratory detection limits. Concentrations of heavy metals in sludge samples were compared with typical sludge testing results from the USA and UK. Concentrations of heavy metals from the south–eastern Australian sludge samples were noted to be much lower than concentrations of same metals reported in the UK but slightly higher than in the USA. Concentrations of lead in south–eastern Australian sludge samples were however found to be lower than the US sludge samples. Results on the leachate testing on aerated and nitrogen purged samples revealed minor differences in the results. Potential reuse options for the sewage sludge in agricultural applications are also discussed.
