Monounsaturated Fatty Acid–Enriched High-Fat Diets Impede Adipose NLRP3 Inflammasome–Mediated IL-1β Secretion and Insulin Resistance Despite Obesity
Orla M. Finucane,Claire L. Lyons,Aoife M. Murphy,Clare M. Reynolds,Rut Klinger,Niamh P. Healy,Aoife A. Cooke,Rebecca C. Coll,Liam McAllan,Kanishka N. Nilaweera,M. O'Reilly,Audrey C. Tierney,Melissa J. Morine,Juan F. Alcala-Diaz,Jose Lopez-Miranda,Darran P. O'Connor,Luke A. J. O'Neill,Fiona C. McGillicuddy,Helen M. Roche +18 more
TL;DR: In vitro, it is demonstrated that the MUFA oleic acid can impede ATP-induced IL-1β secretion from lipopolysaccharide- and SFA-primed cells in an AMPK-dependent manner and suggest that dietary MUFA can attenuate IL- 1β–mediated insulin resistance and adipose dysfunction despite obesity via the preservation of AMPK activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of dietary fat modification on insulin sensitivity and on other risk factors of the metabolic syndrome--LIPGENE: a European randomized dietary intervention study.
Audrey C. Tierney,Jolene McMonagle,Danielle I. Shaw,H I Gulseth,H I Gulseth,Olfa Helal,W. H. M. Saris,J.A. Paniagua,I Gołąbek-Leszczyñska,Catherine Defoort,Christine M. Williams,B. Karsltröm,Bengt Vessby,Aldona Dembinska-Kiec,Jose Lopez-Miranda,Ellen E. Blaak,Christian A. Drevon,Michael J. Gibney,Julie A. Lovegrove,Helen M. Roche +19 more
TL;DR: There was no effect of reducing SFA on SI in weight-stable obese MetS subjects and LC n-3 PUFA supplementation, in association with a low-fat diet, improved TAG-related MetS risk profiles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum Vitamin D Concentration Does Not Predict Insulin Action or Secretion in European Subjects With the Metabolic Syndrome
Hanne L. Gulseth,Ingrid M.F. Gjelstad,Audrey C. Tierney,Julie A. Lovegrove,Catherine Defoort,Ellen E. Blaak,Jose Lopez-Miranda,Beata Kieć-Wilk,Ulferus Ris,Helen M. Roche,Christian A. Drevon,Kåre I. Birkeland +11 more
TL;DR: In a large sample of subjects with the metabolic syndrome, serum concentrations of 25(OH)D3 did not predict insulin action or secretion and clear evidence that D vitamin status directly influences insulin secretion or action is still lacking.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil on cardiovascular risk factors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Elena S. George,Skye Marshall,Hannah L Mayr,Gina L. Trakman,Oana A. Tatucu-Babet,Annie-Claude M. Lassemillante,Andrea Bramley,Anjana J Reddy,Adrienne Forsyth,Audrey C. Tierney,Colleen J. Thomas,Catherine Itsiopoulos,Wolfgang Marx +12 more
TL;DR: High polyphenol oils confer some CVD-risk reduction benefits; however, further studies with longer duration and in non-Mediterranean populations are required.
Journal ArticleDOI
Obesity and body fat classification in the metabolic syndrome: Impact on cardiometabolic risk metabotype
Catherine M. Phillips,Audrey C. Tierney,Pablo Perez-Martinez,Catherine Defoort,Ellen E. Blaak,Ingrid M.F. Gjelstad,Ingrid M.F. Gjelstad,Jose Lopez-Miranda,Malgorzata Kiec-Klimczak,Małgorzata Malczewska-Malec,Christian A. Drevon,Wendy L. Hall,Julie A. Lovegrove,Brita Karlström,Ulf Risérus,Helen M. Roche +15 more
TL;DR: This work investigated whether obesity classification by BMI and body fat percentage influences cardiometabolic profile and dietary responsiveness in 486 MetS subjects (LIPGENE dietary intervention study).
