Journal ArticleDOI
Thermal limits of leaf metabolism across biomes.
Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Mary A. Heskel,Mary A. Heskel,Peter B. Reich,Peter B. Reich,Mark G. Tjoelker,K. W. Lasantha K Weerasinghe,K. W. Lasantha K Weerasinghe,Aurore Penillard,Lingling Zhu,John J. G. Egerton,Keith J. Bloomfield,Danielle Creek,Danielle Creek,Nur H. A. Bahar,Kevin L. Griffin,Vaughan Hurry,Patrick Meir,Patrick Meir,Matthew H. Turnbull,Owen K. Atkin +21 more
TL;DR: It is found that species in mid-latitude regions have the narrowest thermal safety margins in upper canopy leaves; these regions are at the greatest risk of damage due to extreme heat-wave events, especially under conditions when leaf temperatures are further elevated by a lack of transpirational cooling.
Journal ArticleDOI
Convergence in the temperature response of leaf respiration across biomes and plant functional types
Mary A. Heskel,Mary A. Heskel,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Peter B. Reich,Peter B. Reich,Mark G. Tjoelker,Lasantha K. Weerasinghe,Lasantha K. Weerasinghe,Aurore Penillard,John J. G. Egerton,Danielle Creek,Danielle Creek,Keith J. Bloomfield,Jen Xiang,Felipe Sinca,Zsofia R. Stangl,Alberto Martínez-de la Torre,Kevin L. Griffin,Chris Huntingford,Vaughan Hurry,Patrick Meir,Patrick Meir,Matthew H. Turnbull,Owen K. Atkin +24 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that temperature-dependent increases in leaf respiration do not follow a commonly used exponential function, and are found to find a decelerating function as leaves warm, reflecting a declining sensitivity to higher temperatures that is remarkably uniform across all biomes and plant functional types.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasticity of photosynthetic heat tolerance in plants adapted to thermally contrasting biomes.
Lingling Zhu,Keith J. Bloomfield,Charles H. Hocart,John J. G. Egerton,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Aurore Penillard,Lasantha K. Weerasinghe,Lasantha K. Weerasinghe,Owen K. Atkin +8 more
TL;DR: Seasonal variations in Tcrit were positively correlated with the relative abundance of saturated FAs, with FAs accounting for 40% of Tcrit variation and the importance of both plastic adjustments and inherent differences determining contemporary continent-wide patterns in PHT is highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reply to Adams et al.: Empirical versus process-based approaches to modeling temperature responses of leaf respiration.
Mary A. Heskel,Mary A. Heskel,Owen K. Atkin,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Odhran S. O'Sullivan,Peter B. Reich,Peter B. Reich,Mark G. Tjoelker,K. W. Lasantha K Weerasinghe,K. W. Lasantha K Weerasinghe,Aurore Penillard,John J. G. Egerton,Danielle Creek,Danielle Creek,Keith J. Bloomfield,Jen Xiang,Felipe Sinca,Zsofia R. Stangl,Alberto Martínez-de la Torre,Kevin L. Griffin,Chris Huntingford,Vaughan Hurry,Patrick Meir,Patrick Meir,Matthew H. Turnbull +24 more
TL;DR: Empirical versus process-based approaches to modeling temperature responses of leaf respiration are compared, with mixed results in favour of empirical approaches.
