Central nervous system depressant action of flavonoid glycosides

Summary: Results of an ethnobotanical study of wound healing treatments among the tribal people of Tirunelveli hills in southern India are presented. A total of 46 plants belonging to 44 genera and 26 families have been documented for their therapeutic use against wounds and related injuries such as cuts, burns, bruises caused by external injury, boils, sores, abscess and wounds created during delivery. Leaves were the most frequently utilized plant part and most herbal remedies are prepared as paste and applied externally; in some cases medicinal preparations were also administered orally. Of the plants collected in the present study none of the plants have been reported to have such specific wound healing compounds except Areca catechu and Scoparia dulcis . The present study suggested that further clinical experimentation is needed to scientifically evaluate these widely used herbal remedies for possible bioactive effects. Industrial Relevance: The study of ethnomedical systems and herbal medicines as therapeutic agents of a paramount importance in addressing health problems of traditional communities and third world countries as well as industrialized societies. Of the reported plants, Acalypha indica , Anacardium occidentale , Areca catechu , Calotropis gigantea , Cissampelos pareira , Cleome viscosa , Eupatorium odoratum , Euphorbia hirta , Ficus racemosa , Ixora coccinia , Morinda pubescens , Opuntia dillenii , Pongamia pinnata , Scoparia dulcis and Vitex altissima were studied in animal models for wound healing, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity on the basis of their use in traditional medicine as wound healers and these plants can be used to formulate drugs in pharmaceutical companies.

Liver diseases are a major worldwide health problem, with high endemicity in developing countries. They are mainly caused by chemicals and some drugs when taken in very high doses. Despite advances in modern medicine, there is no effective drug available that stimulates liver function, offer protection to the liver from damage or help to regenerate hepatic cells. There is urgent need, therefore, for effective drugs to replace/supplement those in current use. The plant kingdom is undoubtedly valuable as a source of new medicinal agents. The present work constitutes a review of the literature on plant extracts and chemically defined molecules of natural origin with hepatoprotective activity. The review shows 107 plants, their families, geographical distribution, plant parts utilized, type of assay and inducer of liver damage. It also includes 58 compounds isolated from higher plants, classified into appropriate chemical groups. This work intends to aid researchers in the study of natural products useful in the treatment of liver diseases.

A review of natural products with hepatoprotective activity

Scoparinol, a diterpene, isolated from Scoparia dulcis showed significant analgesic (p < 0.001) and anti-inflammatory activity (p < 0.01) in animals. A sedative action of scoparinol was demonstrated by a marked potentiation of pentobarbital-induced sedation with a significant effect on both onset and duration of sleep (p < 0.05). Measurement of urine volume after administration of scoparinol indicated its significant diuretic action.

In this investigation, an attempt has been made to examine the effect of Ni on the wear response of a high-aluminum zinc alloy. The alloy has been modified with 0.3 and 0.9 wt% Ni, and wear tests have been carried out at sliding speeds of 3.925 and 6.54 m/s. The wear characteristics have been correlated with their microstructural features. The unmodified alloy exhibits inferior wear behavior with the increase in sliding speed. The improved wear response of the modified alloys is due to the presence of Ni3Al phase formed throughout the matrix. Moreover, the improvement of the modified alloy is more significant at the higher speed of sliding and also with the increase in Ni content. This study indicates that it is possible to develop modified versions of high-aluminum zinc-based alloys having much improved wear characteristics; the information gains special attention in view of the high speed of sliding used in this study.
