Journal ArticleDOI
On the Cytoadhesion of Plasmodium vivax–Infected Erythrocytes
Bruna O. Carvalho,Stefanie C. P. Lopes,Paulo Nogueira,Patrícia Puccinelli Orlandi,Daniel Y. Bargieri,Yara C. Blanco,Ronei Luciano Mamoni,Juliana A. Leite,Mauricio M. Rodrigues,Irene S. Soares,Tatiane R. Oliveira,Gerhard Wunderlich,Marcus V. G. Lacerda,Hernando A. del Portillo,Maria Ophelia G. De Araújo,Bruce Russell,Rossarin Suwanarusk,Georges Snounou,Laurent Rénia,Fabio T. M. Costa +19 more
TL;DR: A modification of the current paradigms of the pathogenesis of malaria and clear the way to investigate the pathophysiology of P. vivax infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
New malaria vaccine candidates based on the Plasmodium vivax Merozoite Surface Protein-1 and the TLR-5 agonist Salmonella Typhimurium FliC flagellin
Daniel Y. Bargieri,Daniela Santoro Rosa,Catarina J.M. Braga,Bruna O. Carvalho,Fabio T. M. Costa,Noeli Maria Espíndola,Adelaide José Vaz,Irene S. Soares,Luís Carlos de Souza Ferreira,Mauricio M. Rodrigues +9 more
TL;DR: A new class of malaria vaccine formulation based on the use of malarial antigens and the innate immunity agonist FliC is proposed, which contains intrinsic adjuvant properties and enhanced ability to induce specific humoral and cellular immune responses when administered alone or in combination with other adjuvants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Paucity of Plasmodium vivax Mature Schizonts in Peripheral Blood Is Associated With Their Increased Cytoadhesive Potential
Stefanie C. P. Lopes,Letusa Albrecht,Bruna O. Carvalho,André M. Siqueira,Richard Thomson-Luque,Paulo Nogueira,Carmen Fernandez-Becerra,Hernando A. del Portillo,Bruce Russell,Bruce Russell,Laurent Rénia,Marcus V. G. Lacerda,Fabio T. M. Costa +12 more
TL;DR: Ex vivo adhesion assays with Pv-iE before and after maturation are used to demonstrate a higher binding potential of schizonts compared to other asexual stages, prompting a paradigm shift in P. vivax biology and open avenues to investigate the role of Pv- iE sequestration.
Journal ArticleDOI
The South American Plasmodium falciparum var gene repertoire is limited, highly shared and possibly lacks several antigenic types.
Letusa Albrecht,Catarina Castiñeiras,Bruna O. Carvalho,Simone Ladeia-Andrade,Natal Santos da Silva,Erika Hellena Esther Hoffmann,Rosimeire C dalla Martha,Fabio T. M. Costa,Gerhard Wunderlich +8 more
TL;DR: The apparent lack of specific sequences types suggests that the P. falciparum transmission dynamics in the whole Amazon are probably different from any other endemic region studied and possibly interfere with the parasite's ability to efficiently diversify its variant gene repertoires.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thymic alterations in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice.
C.F. Andrade,Jacy Gameiro,Patrícia Resende Alo Nagib,Bruna O. Carvalho,Rafael L. Talaisys,Fabio T. M. Costa,Liana Verinaud +6 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that the presence of parasites in the thymus induces histological modifications that alter the microenvironment, impairing by consequence the successful T cell development and influence the systemic immune response to the parasite.
