Journal ArticleDOI
A recently evolved hexose transporter variant confers resistance to multiple pathogens in wheat.
John W. Moore,S. A. Herrera-Foessel,Caixia Lan,Wendelin Schnippenkoetter,Michael Ayliffe,Julio Huerta-Espino,Morten Lillemo,Libby Viccars,Ricky J. Milne,Sambasivam Periyannan,Xiuying Kong,Wolfgang Spielmeyer,Mark J. Talbot,Harbans Bariana,John W. Patrick,Peter N. Dodds,Ravi P. Singh,Evans Lagudah +17 more
TL;DR: The wheat Lr67 gene is isolated, which confers partial resistance to all three wheat rust pathogen species and powdery mildew, and exerts a dominant-negative effect through heterodimerization with these functional transporters to reduce glucose uptake.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lr68: a new gene conferring slow rusting resistance to leaf rust in wheat
S. A. Herrera-Foessel,Ravi P. Singh,Julio Huerta-Espino,Garry M. Rosewarne,Sambasivam Periyannan,Libby Viccars,V. Calvo-Salazar,Caixia Lan,Evans Lagudah +8 more
TL;DR: Two F6 RILs were identified from the above population that lacked Lr34 and Lr46 but carried the leaf rust resistance gene in 7BL, hereby designated Lr68, and γ-irradiation-induced deletion stocks that lackedLr68 but possessed Lr14b showed that Lr 68 and L r14b are different loci.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence and Spread of New Races of Wheat Stem Rust Fungus: Continued Threat to Food Security and Prospects of Genetic Control
Ravi P. Singh,David Hodson,Yue Jin,Evans Lagudah,Michael Ayliffe,Sridhar Bhavani,Matthew N. Rouse,Zacharias A. Pretorius,Les J. Szabo,Julio Huerta-Espino,Bhoja R. Basnet,Caixia Lan,Mogens S. Hovmøller +12 more
TL;DR: Enhanced research in the last decade under the umbrella of the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative has identified various race-specific resistance genes that can be utilized, preferably in combinations, to develop resistant varieties.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative trait loci of stripe rust resistance in wheat
Garry M. Rosewarne,S. A. Herrera-Foessel,Ravi P. Singh,Julio Huerta-Espino,Caixia Lan,Zhonghu He +5 more
TL;DR: This review utilizes consensus maps to illustrate important genomic regions that have had effects against stripe rust in wheat, and although this methodology cannot distinguish alleles from closely linked genes, it does highlight the extent of genetic diversity for this trait.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lr67/Yr46 confers adult plant resistance to stem rust and powdery mildew in wheat
S. A. Herrera-Foessel,Ravi P. Singh,Morten Lillemo,Julio Huerta-Espino,Sridhar Bhavani,Sukhwinder Singh,Caixia Lan,V. Calvo-Salazar,Evans Lagudah +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Lr67/Yr46 confers partial resistance to stem rust and powdery mildew and is associated with leaf tip necrosis, which can be utilized to provide broad-spectrum durable disease resistance in wheat.
