Large and Rapid Melt-Induced Velocity Changes in the Ablation Zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet
R. S. W. van de Wal,W. Boot,M. R. van den Broeke,C. J. P. P. Smeets,Carleen Reijmer,J.J.A. Donker,Johannes Oerlemans +6 more
TL;DR: Continuous Global Positioning System observations reveal rapid and large ice velocity fluctuations in the western ablation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet, which suggests that the englacial hydraulic system adjusts constantly to the variable meltwater input, which results in a more or less constant ice flux over the years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modelling the climate and surface mass balance of polar ice sheets using RACMO2 – Part 2: Antarctica (1979–2016)
Jan Melchior van Wessem,Willem Jan van de Berg,Brice Noël,Erik van Meijgaard,Charles Amory,Gerit Birnbaum,Constantijn L. Jakobs,Konstantin Krüger,Jan T. M. Lenaerts,Stef Lhermitte,Stefan R. M. Ligtenberg,Brooke Medley,Carleen Reijmer,Kristof Van Tricht,Luke D. Trusel,Lambertus H. van Ulft,Bert Wouters,Jan Wuite,Michiel R. van den Broeke +18 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate modelled Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) near-surface climate, surfacemass balance (SMB) and surface energy balance (SEB) from the updated polar version of the regional atmospheric climate model, RACMO2 (1979-2016).
Journal ArticleDOI
Reassessment of the Antarctic surface mass balance using calibrated output of a regional atmospheric climate model
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed comparison of model-simulated and observed Antarctic surface mass balance (SMB) is presented, using output of a regional atmospheric climate model (RACMO2/ANT) for the period 1980 to 2004.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improved representation of East Antarctic surface mass balance in a regional atmospheric climate model
J. M. van Wessem,Carleen Reijmer,Mathieu Morlighem,Jeremie Mouginot,Eric Rignot,Brooke Medley,Ian Joughin,Bert Wouters,Mathieu Depoorter,Jonathan L. Bamber,Jan T. M. Lenaerts,W. J. van de Berg,M. R. van den Broeke,E. van Meijgaard +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the impact of a recent upgrade in the physics package of the regional atmospheric climate model RACMO2 on the simulated surface mass balance (SMB) of the Antarctic ice sheet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing and Improving the Quality of Unattended Radiation Observations in Antarctica
TL;DR: The quality of atmospheric radiation measurements made at automatic weather stations (AWSs) in Antarctica is assessed in this article, where the AWSs are placed on the coastal ice shelf in the katabatic wind zone and on the high Antarctic plateau, and they measure shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes using unheated/unventilated Kipp and Zonen (KZ) CM3/CG3 sensors.
