Journal ArticleDOI
The Activated Stroma Index Is a Novel and Independent Prognostic Marker in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma
Mert Erkan,Christoph W. Michalski,Christoph W. Michalski,Simon Rieder,Carolin Reiser-Erkan,Ivane Abiatari,Armin Kolb,Nathalia A. Giese,Irene Esposito,Helmut Friess,Jörg Kleeff +10 more
TL;DR: The activated stroma index (ASI) is a novel independent prognostic marker in PDAC in cases undergoing surgery and highlights the impact of the microenvironment in cancer progression and on patient survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
StellaTUM: current consensus and discussion on pancreatic stellate cell research
Mert Erkan,Guido Adler,Minoti V. Apte,Max G. Bachem,Malte Buchholz,Sönke Detlefsen,Irene Esposito,Helmut Friess,Thomas M. Gress,Hans Joerg Habisch,Rosa F. Hwang,Robert Jaster,Jörg Kleeff,Günter Klöppel,Claus Kordes,Craig D. Logsdon,Atsushi Masamune,Christoph W. Michalski,Junseo Oh,Phoebe A. Phillips,Massimo Pinzani,Carolin Reiser-Erkan,Hidekazu Tsukamoto,Jeremy S. Wilson +23 more
TL;DR: Members of the Pancreatic Star Alliance discuss and consolidate current knowledge to outline and delineate areas of consensus or otherwise (eg, with regard to methodological approaches) and, more importantly, to identify essential directions for future research.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer-stellate cell interactions perpetuate the hypoxia-fibrosis cycle in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Mert Erkan,Carolin Reiser-Erkan,Christoph W. Michalski,Stefanie Deucker,Danguole Sauliunaite,Sylvia Streit,Irene Esposito,Helmut Friess,Jörg Kleeff,Jörg Kleeff +9 more
TL;DR: Although PSCs are the dominant producers of VEGF and increase endothelial cell growth in vitro, in the peritumoral stroma, they contribute to the fibrotic/hypoxic milieu through abnormal extracellular matrix deposition and by amplifying endostatin production of cancer cells.
Journal Article
Tumor microenvironment and progression of pancreatic cancer.
TL;DR: It has recently been shown that the activated stroma of pancreatic cancer is an independent prognostic marker with an impact on patient survival as much as the lymph node status of the cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypoxia-inducible proto-oncogene Pim-1 is a prognostic marker in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Carolin Reiser-Erkan,Mert Erkan,Zheng Pan,Sandor Bekasi,Nathalia A. Giese,Sylvia Streit,Christoph W. Michalski,Helmut Friess,Jörg Kleeff +8 more
TL;DR: Ex expression of Pim-1 mRNA and protein increased significantly in pancreatic malignancies compared to benign, inflammatory and pre-malignant conditions and Hypoxia is a novel inducer of PIM-1 expression.
