Assessing nature's contributions to people
Sandra Díaz,Unai Pascual,Marie Stenseke,Berta Martín-López,Robert T. Watson,Zsolt Molnár,Rosemary Hill,Kai M. A. Chan,Ivar Andreas Baste,Kate A. Brauman,Stephen Polasky,Andrew Church,Mark Lonsdale,Anne Larigauderie,Paul Leadley,Alexander P.E. van Oudenhoven,Felice van der Plaat,Matthias Schröter,Sandra Lavorel,Yildiz Aumeeruddy-Thomas,Elena Bukvareva,Kirsten Davies,Sebsebe Demissew,Gunay Erpul,Pierre Failler,Carlos A. Guerra,Chad L. Hewitt,Hans Keune,Sarah Lindley,Yoshihisa Shirayama +29 more
TL;DR: The notion of nature's contributions to people (NCP) was introduced by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) as mentioned in this paper, a joint global effort by governments, academia, and civil society to assess and promote knowledge of Earth's biodiversity and ecosystems and their contribution to human societies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonindigenous biota on artificial structures: could habitat creation facilitate biological invasions?
Tim M. Glasby,Tim M. Glasby,Sean D. Connell,Sean D. Connell,Michael G. Holloway,Chad L. Hewitt +5 more
TL;DR: It is argued that pontoons and pilings represent beachheads (i.e. entry points for invasion) for many nonindigenous epibiota and so enhance the spread and establishment of NIS in estuaries and so be a serious threat to native biodiversity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Introduced and cryptogenic species in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia
Chad L. Hewitt,Marnie L. Campbell,Ronald E. Thresher,Richard B. Martin,Sue Boyd,Brian F. Cohen,David R. Currie,Martin F. Gomon,Michael J. Keough,John Lewis,Matthew M. Lockett,Matthew M. Lockett,Nicole Mays,Matthew A. McArthur,Timothy D. O'Hara,Gary C. B. Poore,D. Jeff Ross,D. Jeff Ross,Melissa J. Storey,Melissa J. Storey,Jeanette E. Watson,Robin S. Wilson +21 more
TL;DR: In contrast to Northern Hemisphere studies, PPB (and Southern Hemisphere introductions in general) have significantly different suites of successfully invading taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Introduced Macroalgae – a Growing Concern
TL;DR: The mechanisms of seaweed introductions are little understood as research on introduced seaweeds has been mostly reactive, following discoveries of introductions and future research needs to elucidate the invasion process, interactions between invaders, and impacts to support prevention and management of seaweeds introductions.
Journal ArticleDOI
‘Double trouble’: the expansion of the Suez Canal and marine bioinvasions in the Mediterranean Sea
Bella S. Galil,Ferdinando Boero,Marnie L. Campbell,James T. Carlton,Elizabeth Cook,Simonetta Fraschetti,Stephan Gollasch,Chad L. Hewitt,Anders Jelmert,Enrique Macpherson,Agnese Marchini,Cynthia H. McKenzie,Dan Minchin,Anna Occhipinti-Ambrogi,Henn Ojaveer,Sergej Olenin,Stefano Piraino,Gregory M. Ruiz +17 more
TL;DR: Expected to double the capacity of the Suez Canal, the expansion is sure to have a diverse range of effects, at local and regional scales, on both the biological diversity and the ecosystem goods and services of the Mediterranean Sea.
