Sulfate formation is dominated by manganese-catalyzed oxidation of SO2 on aerosol surfaces during haze events.
Weigang Wang,Mingyuan Liu,Tiantian Wang,Yu Song,Li Zhou,Junji Cao,Jingnan Hu,Guigang Tang,Zhe Chen,Zhijie Li,Zhenying Xu,Chao Peng,Chaofan Lian,Yan Chen,Yuepeng Pan,Yun-Hong Zhang,Yele Sun,Weijun Li,Tong Zhu,Hezhong Tian,Maofa Ge +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that transition metal-catalyzed oxidation of SO2 on aerosol surfaces could be the dominant sulfate formation pathway and investigate this hypothesis by integrating chamber experiments, numerical simulations and in-field observations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Continuous and comprehensive atmospheric observations in Beijing: a station to understand the complex urban atmospheric environment
Yongchun Liu,Chao Yan,Zemin Feng,Feixue Zheng,Xiaolong Fan,Yusheng Zhang,Chang Li,Ying Zhou,Zhuohui Lin,Yishou Guo,Ying Zhang,Li Ma,Wenshuo Zhou,Zhikun Liu,Lubna Dada,Kaspar Dällenbach,Jenni Kontkanen,Runlong Cai,Tommy Chan,Biwu Chu,Wei Du,Lei Yao,Yonghong Wang,Jing Cai,Juha Kangasluoma,Tom V. Worsnop,Heikki Junninen,Hong He,Veli-Matti Kerminen,Jun Zheng,Lin Wang,Jingkun Jiang,Tuukka Petäjä,F. Bianchi,Markku Kulmala +48 more
TL;DR: In this article, the key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tack clean air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil society, including the government.
Journal ArticleDOI
The promotion effect of nitrous acid on aerosol formation in wintertime in Beijing : the possible contribution of traffic-related emissions
Yongchun Liu,Yusheng Zhang,Chaofan Lian,Chao Yan,Zeming Feng,Feixue Zheng,Xiaolong Fan,Yan Chen,Weigang Wang,Biwu Chu,Biwu Chu,Yonghong Wang,Jing Cai,Wei Du,Kaspar R. Daellenbach,Juha Kangasluoma,Juha Kangasluoma,F. Bianchi,F. Bianchi,Joni Kujansuu,Joni Kujansuu,Tuukka Petäjä,Wang Xuefei,Bo Hu,Yuesi Wang,Maofa Ge,Hong He,Markku Kulmala,Markku Kulmala +28 more
TL;DR: Based on field measurements in downtown Beijing, this paper showed that the photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) could promote the formation of organic and nitrate aerosol in wintertime Beijing as evidenced by the growth of the mass concentration of organic aerosols linearly increasing as a function of consumed HONO from early morning to noon.
Journal ArticleDOI
Light absorption properties and potential sources of brown carbon in Fenwei Plain during winter 2018-2019.
Wenyu Zhang,Weigang Wang,Jie Li,Shuangliang Ma,Chaofan Lian,Kun Li,Bo Shi,Mingyuan Liu,Yanyu Li,Qingqing Wang,Yele Sun,Shengrui Tong,Maofa Ge +12 more
TL;DR: The absorption properties and potential source of BrC based on a seven-wavelength aethalometer in the winter of 2018-2019 at an urban site of Sanmenxia in Fenwei Plain in central China showed double-peak pattern, and BrC had shown small fluctuations under haze days compared with clean days.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elucidating the effect of HONO on O3 pollution by a case study in southwest China.
Yiming Yang,Li Xin,Zu Kexin,Chaofan Lian,Shiyi Chen,Shiyi Chen,Huabin Dong,Huabin Dong,Miao Feng,Hefan Liu,Jingwei Liu,Keding Lu,Keding Lu,Keding Lu,Sihua Lu,Sihua Lu,Xuefei Ma,Danlin Song,Weigang Wang,Suding Yang,Xinping Yang,Xuena Yu,Yuan Zhu,Limin Zeng,Limin Zeng,Limin Zeng,Qinwen Tan,Yuanhang Zhang,Yuanhang Zhang,Yuanhang Zhang +29 more
TL;DR: Higher HONO level supplying for OH radical initiation in the early morning might be the main reason for the higher O3 peak values in P1, which explained the correlation (R2 = 0.51) between average O3 value during daytime (10:00-19:00 LT) and average HONSO value during early morning (00:00 -05:00LT).
