Permafrost and climate in Europe: Monitoring and modelling thermal, geomorphological and geotechnical responses
Charles Harris,Lukas U. Arenson,Hanne H. Christiansen,Bernd Etzelmüller,Regula Frauenfelder,Stephan Gruber,Wilfried Haeberli,Christian Hauck,Martin Hölzle,Ole Humlum,Ketil Isaksen,Andreas Kääb,Martina A. Kern-Lütschg,Michael Lehning,Norikazu Matsuoka,Julian B. Murton,Jeanette Nötzli,Marcia Phillips,Neil Ross,Matti Seppälä,Sarah M. Springman,Daniel Vonder Mühll +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the changing state of European permafrost within a spatial zone that includes the continuous high latitude arctic permfrost of Svalbard and the discontinuous high altitude mountain permaffrost of Iceland, Fennoscandia and the Alps.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of rise in mean annual temperature on the stability of rock slopes containing ice‐filled discontinuities
TL;DR: In this paper, the stiffness and strength of an ice-filled joint are a function of both normal stress and temperature, which implies that if the stability of a slope is maintained by icefilled joints, its factor of safety will reduce with temperature rise.
Journal ArticleDOI
Warming permafrost in European mountains
Charles Harris,Daniel Vonder Mühll,Ketil Isaksen,Wilfried Haeberli,Johan Ludvig Sollid,Lorenz King,Per Holmlund,Francesco Dramis,Mauro Guglielmin,David Palacios +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the first systematic measurements of European mountain permafrost temperatures from a latitudinal transect of six boreholes extending from the Alps, through Scandinavia to Svalbard, were presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
The assessment of potential geotechnical hazards associated with mountain permafrost in a warming global climate
TL;DR: In this article, a staged approach is proposed to investigate the potential permafrost-related hazards in the high mountain zone of the European Alps by using topographic and geological maps.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent warming of mountain permafrost in Svalbard and Scandinavia
TL;DR: In this paper, three deep boreholes (≥100 m) were recently drilled in Svalbard (Janssonhaugen) and in Scandinavia (Tarfalaryggen and Juvvasshoe) for long-term permafrost monitoring.
