TL;DR: Investigation of Dutch frontline workers’ child abuse detection and reporting behaviors showed that although both groups of professionals are aware of child abuse signs and risks, they are also lacking specific knowledge.
Abstract: Public child healthcare doctors and nurses, and primary school teachers play a pivotal role in the detection and reporting of child abuse, because they encounter almost all children in the population during their daily work. However, they report relatively few cases of suspected child abuse to child protective agencies. The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate Dutch frontline workers’ child abuse detection and reporting behaviors. Focus group interviews were held among 16 primary school teachers and 17 public health nurses and physicians. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed according to factors of the Integrated Change model, such as knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, skills, social influences and barriers influencing detection and reporting of child abuse. Findings showed that although both groups of professionals are aware of child abuse signs and risks, they are also lacking specific knowledge. The most salient differences between the two professional groups are related to attitude and (communication) skills. The results suggest that frontline workers are in need of supportive tools in the child abuse detection and reporting process. On the basis of our findings, directions for improvement of child abuse detection and reporting are discussed.

TL;DR: Results indicate that children with high CU traits have no deficiencies in true memory performance, yet are less susceptible to developing false memories concerning emotionally negative material.
Abstract: Several studies have found that children with callous-unemotional (CU) traits have a deficit in processing emotionally negative material. The present study examined whether this deficit also affects emotional memory. Twenty-two children with low CU traits and 24 children with high CU traits between 8 and 12 years of age were selected from a community sample and presented with neutral and negative emotional words, using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. On true recall, there was no difference between the groups. Both groups had higher true recall rates for the neutral word lists than for the negative lists. However, on false recall, although there were no group differences for neutral word lists, the high CU group recalled significantly fewer critical lures on the negative word lists than the low CU group. Furthermore, the high CU group had significantly less false recall on the negative word lists compared to the neutral word lists, while the low CU group showed no difference in false recall between the word lists. These results indicate that children with high CU traits have no deficiencies in true memory performance, yet are less susceptible to developing false memories concerning emotionally negative material.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a forensic mental health assessment of a man who killed his wife and two young daughters, in order to highlight the value of semi-structured interviews for diagnosis, and the use of literature review to increase understanding of a case.
Abstract: Purpose – Mental health evaluation in criminal cases is a complex and challenging task. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the value of semi-structured interviews for diagnosis, the use of literature review to increase understanding of a case, and the importance of looking ‘‘beyond’’ the criminal offence itself. Design/methodology/approach – The author conducted a forensic mental health assessment of a man who killed his wife and two young daughters. The case is presented in the order in which information reached the psychologist, so her clinical reasoning becomes apparent. Findings from the police file are integrated with psychological test results and a literature review on familicide and uxoricide. Findings – The case analysis illustrates the perpetrator fits a personality profile found in empirical research on male spousal killers, who often suffer from dependent, avoidant and over-controlled personality pathology. Four mental health experts who previously reported on this case had not agreed on a diagnosis. Using a more structured approach to assessment, the current analysis sheds new light on the relationship between mental disorder and offence. Practical implications – The use of semi-structured interviews for psychiatric diagnosis increases diagnostic reliability. Since there is so much at stake for the assessed in a criminal investigation, the importance of reliability and accuracy of diagnosis cannot be overestimated. Forensic mental health experts serve the court best by integrating findings from structured assessment instruments, file information and empirical research on comparable offender types. Originality/value – This paper can be useful for teaching purposes and provides guidance to both novice and experienced forensic experts.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the use of structured risk assessment instruments in forensic psychiatry and found that they may aid in the assessment of violence, victimization, self-harm, suicide, unauthorized leave, substance use, and self-neglect risk among forensic populations.
English Abstract: The author and colleagues from the University of Maastricht investigated the use of structured risk assessment instruments in forensic psychiatry.
