Surveillance of endemic human coronaviruses (HCoV-NL63, OC43 and 229E) associated with pneumonia in Kilifi, Kenya [version 1;peer review: awaiting peer review]

TL;DR: Overall, 4% of paediatric pneumonia admissions were associated with three endemic HCoVs, with a high proportion of cases co-occurring with another respiratory virus, with no clear seasonal pattern, and with the age-distribution of cases following that of pneumonia admissions (i.e. highest in infants).
Posted ContentDOI

Characterizing the countrywide epidemic spread of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus in Kenya between 2009 and 2018

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed 383 A(H1N1)pdm09 viral genomes from hospitalized patients between 2009 and 2018 from seven locations across Kenya, using these genomes and contemporaneously sampled global sequences, characterized the spread of the virus in Kenya over several seasons using phylodynamic methods.
Posted ContentDOI

The importance of supplementary immunisation activities to prevent measles outbreaks during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed the risk of measles outbreaks during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya as a case study for the African Region and predicted the age-adjusted population immunity in Kenya and estimated the probability of outbreaks when contact-reducing COVID19 interventions are lifted.
Journal ArticleDOI

Whole genome sequencing of two human rhinovirus A types (A101 and A15) detected in Kenya, 2016-2018

TL;DR: In this article, a tiled amplicon type-specific protocol for genome amplification and sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform of two HRV types, A15 and A101, was developed.
