Patterns of species change in anthropogenically disturbed forests of Madagascar
Mitchell T. Irwin,Patricia C. Wright,Christopher R. Birkinshaw,Brian L. Fisher,Charlie J. Gardner,Julian Glos,Steven M. Goodman,Paul V. Loiselle,Pascal Rabeson,Jean-Luc Raharison,Marie Jeanne Raherilalao,Daniel Rakotondravony,Achille P. Raselimanana,Jonah Ratsimbazafy,John S. Sparks,Lucienne Wilmé,Jörg U. Ganzhorn +16 more
TL;DR: This review of the responses of species to anthropogenic disturbance in Madagascar stresses the urgency of applied studies that assess species’ ecology, behaviour and health across disturbance gradients, including purely anthropogenic landscapes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The ever-increasing diversity in mouse lemurs: three new species in north and northwestern Madagascar.
Gillian L. Olivieri,Elke Zimmermann,Blanchard Randrianambinina,Solofonirina Rasoloharijaona,Daniel Rakotondravony,Katerina Guschanski,Ute Radespiel +6 more
TL;DR: Elements of both biogeographic models are combined in a new hypothesis that aims to explain the speciation process leading to the present distribution of mouse lemurs in Madagascar.
Journal ArticleDOI
The distribution and conservation of bats in the dry regions of Madagascar
Steven M. Goodman,Daudet Andriafidison,Radosoa A. Andrianaivoarivelo,Scott G. Cardiff,Scott G. Cardiff,Edina Ifticene,Richard K. B. Jenkins,Amyot Kofoky,Tsibara Mbohoahy,Daniel Rakotondravony,Julie Ranivo,Fanja H. Ratrimomanarivo,Julie H. Razafimanahaka,Paul A. Racey +13 more
TL;DR: The authors carried out extensive field surveys in the dry forest portions of Madagascar to document the species of bats occurring in these regions and found that 28 species of Chiroptera occur in this region of the island, of which 27 during their inventories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensory basis of food detection in wild Microcebus murinus
Björn Martin Siemers,Björn Martin Siemers,Holger R. Goerlitz,Eric Robsomanitrandrasana,Marcus Piep,Jean-Baptiste Ramanamanjato,Daniel Rakotondravony,Olga Ramilijaona,Joerg U. Ganzhorn +8 more
TL;DR: This study provides the first experimental data on the sensory ecology of food detection in mouse lemurs, and investigates whether they use visual, auditory, and motion cues to find and to localize prey arthropods and further whether olfactory cues are sufficient for finding fruit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protected area surface extension in Madagascar: Do endemism and threatened species remain useful criteria for site selection?
Jeanneney Rabearivony,Russell Thorstrom,Lily-Arison Rene de Roland,Marius Rakotondratsima,Tolojanahary R. A. Andriamalala,Gilbert Razafimanjato,Daniel Rakotondravony,Achille P. Raselimanana,Michel Rakotoson +8 more
TL;DR: The long term ecological viability of these sites has been shown by population stability of the two Critically Endangered flagship species, the Madagascar fish eagle and the recently rediscovered Madagascar pochard, and high biological diversity also justifies their inclusion into Madagascar’s SAPM.
