Molecular imprinting technology (MIT), often described as a method of making a molecular lock to match a molecular key, is a technique for the creation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with tailor-made binding sites complementary to the template molecules in shape, size and functional groups. Owing to their unique features of structure predictability, recognition specificity and application universality, MIPs have found a wide range of applications in various fields. Herein, we propose to comprehensively review the recent advances in molecular imprinting including versatile perspectives and applications, concerning novel preparation technologies and strategies of MIT, and highlight the applications of MIPs. The fundamentals of MIPs involving essential elements, preparation procedures and characterization methods are briefly outlined. Smart MIT for MIPs is especially highlighted including ingenious MIT (surface imprinting, nanoimprinting, etc.), special strategies of MIT (dummy imprinting, segment imprinting, etc.) and stimuli-responsive MIT (single/dual/multi-responsive technology). By virtue of smart MIT, new formatted MIPs gain popularity for versatile applications, including sample pretreatment/chromatographic separation (solid phase extraction, monolithic column chromatography, etc.) and chemical/biological sensing (electrochemical sensing, fluorescence sensing, etc.). Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and future perspectives to accelerate the development of MIT, and to utilize it for further developing versatile MIPs with a wide range of applications (650 references).

Molecular imprinting: perspectives and applications

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) concerns formation of selective sites in a polymer matrix with the memory of a template. Recently, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused extensive attention and been widely applied in many fields, such as solid-phase extraction, chemical sensors and artificial antibodies owing to their desired selectivity, physical robustness, thermal stability, as well as low cost and easy preparation. With the rapid development of MIT as a research hotspot, it faces a number of challenges, involving biological macromolecule imprinting, heterogeneous binding sites, template leakage, incompatibility with aqueous media, low binding capacity and slow mass transfer, which restricts its applications in various aspects. This critical review briefly reviews the current status of MIT, particular emphasis on significant progresses of novel imprinting methods, some challenges and effective strategies for MIT, and highlighted applications of MIPs. Finally, some significant attempts in further developing MIT are also proposed (236 references).

Controlling Mineral Morphologies and Structures in Biological and Synthetic Systems

Biologically-formed hard tissues, referred to as biominerals, have intrigued the materials engineering community for years because of the high degree of crystallographic control that is exerted during the precipitation of the bioinorganic crystals. In recent years, there has been a shift in attention, from prior studies that focused on specific organic-inorganic interactions that modulate the crystal morphology via the conventional crystallization pathway, to recent studies that find that many biominerals are formed via an amorphous precursor pathway. It has become clear that the things we thought we had learned about biominerals before, may or may not be relevant to truly understanding the mechanisms involved in biomineralization. Having witnessed this paradigm shift first hand, I am inclined to provide a review from this historical perspective, where I hope to belay some ideas about where we were, where we are, and where we are going, with respect to understanding how these shells and other biominerals are formed. Therefore, one goal of this review is to try and provide a link between the prior literature and the new literature, which might be useful to newcomers in the field, whom I suspect may find it confusing and difficult to integrate the findings in these different types of studies across this time period. A second goal is to try and integrate some of the knowledge obtained from in vitro model systems, which can be more amenable to obtaining mechanistic information, with the in vivo and ex vivo observational studies on biominerals. A third goal is to demonstrate that there may be certain unifying principles found in biomineral systems that seem widely diverse, such as from diatoms, to mollusk shells, to vertebrate bones and teeth. A final goal (the not so hidden agenda), is to demonstrate that not only is there as strong likelihood that many biominerals are formed by an amorphous precursor, but that the amorphous phase may possess fluidic properties that impart new processing capabilities to the system. Of course those who know my work will readily assess that I am referring to the polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) process, which has been a primary focus in my lab. Along these lines, some new hypotheses are presented regarding the morphogenesis of certain biominerals, such as mollusk nacre, kidney stones, and bones and teeth, along with a review of the literature that provides support to these new ideas. The intent is to stimulate thoughtful discussions in this rapidly emerging area, which seemingly provides a unifying principle in biomineralization.

1.1. Biomineral Overview
Biominerals that have intrigued the materials engineer for years. The diversity of biominerals became particularly evident by the variety of books on biominerals that emerged in the late 80’s to 90’s,1–11 which has continued with a few more recent additions to this nice collection.12–16 Many people are probably not even aware of the diversity of biologically formed minerals, so a sampling is provided in Table 1 to illustrate some of the different chemistries that evolved in the formation of various biological hard tissues. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) biominerals of invertebrates, such as mollusk shells and sea urchin spines, have been particularly well studied due to their accessibility, and because of the high degree of crystallographic control that is achieved in these biologically formed crystals. The calcium phosphate (CaP) biominerals of the vertebrates, such as bones and teeth, have also been extensively investigated because of their remarkable structure and mechanical properties, and for the more obvious reasons of health related issues.14 Calcium oxalate (CaOx) biominerals can be found in plants, but the majority of studies have focused on the pathological form of CaOx that is found in kidney stones, which often occurs in conjunction with CaP deposits.8,14

Magnetic nanoparticles: Synthesis, stabilization, functionalization, characterization, and applications

This paper reports a surface functional monomer-directing strategy for the highly dense imprinting of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) molecules at the surface of silica nanoparticles. It has been demonstrated that the vinyl functional monomer layer of the silica surface can not only direct the selective occurrence of imprinting polymerization at the surface of silica through the copolymerization of vinyl end groups with functional monomers, but also drive TNT templates into the formed polymer shells through the charge-transfer complexing interactions between TNT and the functional monomer layer. The two basic processes lead to the formation of uniform core−shell TNT-imprinted nanoparticles with a controllable shell thickness and a high density of effective recognition sites. A surface functional monomer-directing strategy for highly dense imprinting of TNT at surface of silica nanoparticles.

This paper reports the finding of an investigation of a surface molecular self-assembly strategy for molecular imprinting of polymer nanowires/nanotubes. It has been demonstrated that 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) templates were spontaneously assembled onto aminopropyl group-modified alumina pore walls by a strong charge-transfer complexing interaction between amino groups and electron-deficient nitroaromatics, forming a novel basis of surface molecular imprinting. While an additional amount of TNT templates was further replenished into a precursor mixture, a stepwise progressive polymerization was designed toward the controllable preparation of TNT-imprinted polymer nanowire/nanotube arrays in an alumina membrane. The imprinted nanowires/nanotubes with a high density of surface-imprinted sites and regular interior sites exhibit the high capacity of binding TNT molecules, which is nearly 2.5−3.0-fold that of normal imprinted particles. Surface molecular self-assembly strategy for TNT imprinting of polymer nanowire/nanotube arrays.

In this paper, we report a simple polypeptide-directed strategy for fabricating large spherical assembly of CaCO3 nanoparticles. Stepwise growth and assembly of a large number of nanoparticles have been observed, from the formation of an amorphous liquidlike CaCO3-polypeptide precursor, to the crystallization and stabilization of polypeptide-capped nanoparticles, and eventually, the spherical assembly of nanoparticles. The “soft” poly(aspartate)-capping layer binding on a nanoparticle surface resulted in the unusual soft nature of nanoparticle assembly, providing a reservoir of primary nanoparticles with a moderate mobility, which is the basis of a new strategy for reconstructing nanoparticle assembly into complex nanoparticle architectures. Biomimetic Assembly of Polypeptide-Stabilized CaCO3 Nanoparticles

This paper reports that extremely strongly coupled excitonic states were formed in H-aggregated monocrystalline nanosheets and semicrystalline nanowires of coplanar organic molecules of 2,5-bis(4−methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone, due to the highly regular face-to-face stacking of molecular excitons. It was demonstrated that the spectral absorption and fluorescence emission behaviors are dependent on the routes of molecular aggregation and the ordered degree of molecular arrangement in aggregated nanoparticles. In particular, the H-type aggregation of molecules through a highly ordered molecular arrangement in the monocrystalline nanosheets led to the formation of a new exciton coupling state with an energy band higher than that in normal semi-/noncrystalline H-aggregation.
