The impact of land use/land cover scale on modelling urban ecosystem services
Darren R. Grafius,Ronald Corstanje,Philip H. Warren,Karl L. Evans,Steven Hancock,James A. Harris +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the sensitivity of ecosystem service model outputs to the spatial resolution of input data, and whether any resultant scale dependency is constant across different ecosystem services and model approaches (e.g. stock- versus flow-based) was tested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Linking ecosystem services, urban form and green space configuration using multivariate landscape metric analysis.
TL;DR: A multivariate approach with landscape metric analysis was coupled with principal component analysis and cluster analysis to isolate the most effective measures of landscape variability and then grouped habitat patches according to their attributes, independent of the surrounding urban form.
Journal ArticleDOI
A bird’s eye view: using circuit theory to study urban landscape connectivity for birds
Darren R. Grafius,Ronald Corstanje,Gavin M. Siriwardena,Kate E. Plummer,Kate E. Plummer,James A. Harris +5 more
TL;DR: Trees provide suitable habitat for urban woodland bird species, but their location in large, contiguous patches and corridors along barriers also facilitates connectivity networks throughout the urban matrix, suggesting the approach may be expandable if re-parameterised.
Journal ArticleDOI
The hidden potential of urban horticulture
Jill L. Edmondson,Hamish Cunningham,Daniele O. Densley Tingley,Miriam C. Dobson,Darren R. Grafius,Jonathan R. Leake,Nicola McHugh,Jacob Nickles,Gareth K. Phoenix,Anthony J. Ryan,Virginia Stovin,Nick Taylor Buck,Philip H. Warren,Duncan D. Cameron +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the availability of space to expand urban horticulture and how to sustainably integrate it into the existing urban fabric, and propose a generic conceptual framework that identifies key scientific, engineering and socio-economic challenges to, and opportunities for, the realization of untapped urban Horticultural potential.
Journal ArticleDOI
Urban meadows as an alternative to short mown grassland: effects of composition and height on biodiversity.
Briony A. Norton,Briony A. Norton,Gary D. Bending,Rachel Rachel Clark,Ronald Corstanje,Nigel Dunnett,Karl L. Evans,Darren R. Grafius,Darren R. Grafius,Emily Gravestock,Samuel M. Grice,James A. Harris,Sally Hilton,Helen Hoyle,Helen Hoyle,Edward Lim,Theresa G. Mercer,Theresa G. Mercer,Mark Pawlett,Oliver L. Pescott,J. Paul Richards,Georgina E. Southon,Philip H. Warren +22 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that diversification of urban greenspace by planting urban meadows in place of some mown amenity grassland is likely to generate substantial biodiversity benefits, with a mosaic of meadow types likely to maximize such benefits.
