Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Community-Wide Vaccination with PCV-7 on Pneumococcal Nasopharyngeal Carriage in The Gambia: A Cluster-Randomized Trial
Anna Roca,Anna Roca,Philip C. Hill,Philip C. Hill,John Townend,Uzo Egere,Martin Antonio,Abdoulie Bojang,Abiodun Akisanya,Teresa Litchfield,David Nsekpong,Claire Oluwalana,Stephen R. C. Howie,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola,Richard A. Adegbola +15 more
TL;DR: In a cluster-randomized trial conducted in Gambian villages, it is found that vaccination of children with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines reduced vaccine-type pneumitiscal carriage even among nonvaccinated older children and adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pre-vaccination nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in a Nigerian population: epidemiology and population biology.
Ifedayo M. O. Adetifa,Martin Antonio,Christy A. N. Okoromah,Chinelo Ebruke,Victor Inem,David Nsekpong,Abdoulie Bojang,Richard A. Adegbola +7 more
TL;DR: Based on the coverage of serotypes in this study, PCV-13 is the obvious choice to reduce disease burden and prevalence of drug resistant pneumococci, however, its use will require careful monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonality and outbreak of a predominant Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1 clone from The Gambia: expansion of ST217 hypervirulent clonal complex in West Africa.
Martin Antonio,Ishrat Hakeem,Timothy Awine,Ousman Secka,Kawsu Sankareh,David Nsekpong,George Lahai,Abiodun Akisanya,Uzochukwu Egere,Godwin Enwere,Syed M. A. Zaman,Philip C. Hill,Tumani Corrah,Felicity T. Cutts,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola +15 more
TL;DR: For over a decade, isolates of ST618 have been the dominant lineage among serotype 1 carriage and disease isolates circulating in the Gambia and shows similar epidemiological features to those of the meningococcus in the African meningitis belt being able to cause outbreaks of disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
The immunogenicity and impact on nasopharyngeal carriage of fewer doses of conjugate pneumococcal vaccine immunization schedule.
Martin O. C. Ota,Adebayo Akinsola,John Townend,Martin Antonio,Godwin Enwere,Godwin Enwere,David Nsekpong,Abdoulie Bojang,Mark Saaka,Robert L. Burton,Akram Zaman,David Goldblatt,Richard A. Adegbola,Richard A. Adegbola +13 more
TL;DR: The differences in antibody responses and pneumococcal carriage between the groups diminished following booster with PPV, implying that administration of one or two doses of PCV7, with a booster dose of PPV might lower the cost of protection against IPD in young children in resource poor countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indirect effect of 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on pneumococcal carriage in newborns in rural Gambia: a randomised controlled trial.
Uzochukwu Egere,John Townend,Anna Roca,Abiodun Akinsanya,Abdoulie Bojang,David Nsekpong,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola,Philip C. Hill,Philip C. Hill +9 more
TL;DR: PCV-7 significantly reduced carriage of VT pneumococci in unvaccinated infants and this indirect effect likely originated from both the child and adult vaccinated populations.
