Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of nine-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine against pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease in The Gambia: randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Felicity T. Cutts,Syed M. A. Zaman,Godwin Enwere,Shabbar Jaffar,Orin S. Levine,Orin S. Levine,J. B. Okoko,Claire Oluwalana,Adeola Vaughan,Steven Obaro,Amanda Leach,Keith P. W. J. McAdam,Ekow Biney,Mark Saaka,U. Onwuchekwa,Fred G. Yallop,Nathaniel F. Pierce,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola +18 more
TL;DR: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has high efficacy against radiological pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease, and can substantially reduce admissions and improve child survival in this rural African setting.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nasopharyngeal Carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Gambian Villagers
Philip C. Hill,Abiodun Akisanya,Kawsu Sankareh,Yin Bun Cheung,Mark Saaka,George Lahai,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola +7 more
TL;DR: Pneumococcal carriage rates among Gambian villagers are very high, and a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine of restricted valency should reduce the pool of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunogenicity and serotype-specific efficacy of a 9-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-9) determined during an efficacy trial in The Gambia
Mark Saaka,Brown J. Okoko,Robert Kohberger,Shabbar Jaffar,Godwin Enwere,Ekow Biney,Claire Oluwalana,Adeola Vaughan,Syed M. A. Zaman,L. Asthon,David Goldblatt,Brian Greenwood,Felicity T. Cutts,Felicity T. Cutts,Richard A. Adegbola +14 more
TL;DR: The PCV-9 studied was immunogenic in a Gambian population where it was also found to be efficacious and previously unpublished data on serotype-specific clinical vaccine efficacy from the main trial is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
The immunogenicity and impact on nasopharyngeal carriage of fewer doses of conjugate pneumococcal vaccine immunization schedule.
Martin O. C. Ota,Adebayo Akinsola,John Townend,Martin Antonio,Godwin Enwere,Godwin Enwere,David Nsekpong,Abdoulie Bojang,Mark Saaka,Robert L. Burton,Akram Zaman,David Goldblatt,Richard A. Adegbola,Richard A. Adegbola +13 more
TL;DR: The differences in antibody responses and pneumococcal carriage between the groups diminished following booster with PPV, implying that administration of one or two doses of PCV7, with a booster dose of PPV might lower the cost of protection against IPD in young children in resource poor countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pneumococcal Antibody Concentrations and Carriage of Pneumococci more than 3 Years after Infant Immunization with a Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
Adebayo Akinsola,Martin O. C. Ota,Godwin Enwere,Brown J. Okoko,Syed M. A. Zaman,Mark Saaka,Ekpedeme David Nsekpong,Aderonke Odutola,Brian Greenwood,Felicity T. Cutts,Richard A. Adegbola +10 more
TL;DR: Pneumococcal antibody concentrations in Gambian children were high 34–48 months after a 3-dose primary infant vaccination series of PCV-9 for serotypes other than serotypes 1 and 18C, and were significantly higher than in control children for 3 of the 9 serotypes.
