Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnosis and management of BK polyomavirus interstitial nephritis in renal transplant recipients.
David N. Howell,Stephen R. Smith,David W. Butterly,Preston S. Klassen,Hannah R. Krigman,James L. Burchette,Sara E. Miller +6 more
TL;DR: Both renal biopsy and EM of urine samples are useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of polyomavirus infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of Dialysis Dose and Membrane on Infection-Related Hospitalization and Death: Results of the HEMO Study
Michael Allon,Michael Allon,Thomas A. Depner,Milena Radeva,James L. Bailey,Srinivasan Beddhu,David W. Butterly,Daniel W. Coyne,Jennifer J. Gassman,Allen M. Kaufman,George A. Kaysen,Julia A. Lewis,Steve J. Schwab +12 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, infection accounted for almost one fourth of deaths and was not reduced by higher dose or by high flux dialyzers, and most infection-related hospitalizations were not attributed to vascular access.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of transposed brachiobasilic fistulas to upper arm grafts and brachiocephalic fistulas
Matthew J. Oliver,Richard L. McCann,Richard L. McCann,Olafur S. Indridason,Olafur S. Indridason,David W. Butterly,David W. Butterly,Steve J. Schwab,Steve J. Schwab +8 more
TL;DR: Compared with brachiocephalic fistulas, transposed brachiobasilic fistulas are more likely to mature but are at increased risk of thrombosis after maturation and should be considered before placing an upper arm graft for patients that cannot achieve a functional brachiospecific fistula.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beneficial effect of plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin on renal allograft survival of patients with acute humoral rejection.
Paulo Novis Rocha,David W. Butterly,Arthur Greenberg,Donal N. Reddan,Janet E. Tuttle-Newhall,Bradley H. Collins,Paul C. Kuo,Nancy L. Reinsmoen,Timothy A. Fields,David N. Howell,Stephen R. Smith +10 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that AHR, when diagnosed early and treated aggressively with plasmapheresis and IVIG, carries a short-term prognosis that is similar to ACR.
Journal ArticleDOI
A clustering of epidural abscesses in chronic hemodialysis patients: risks of salvaging access catheters in cases of infection.
Eugene C. Kovalik,John R. Raymond,Frank J. Albers,Michael Berkoben,David W. Butterly,B Montella,Peter J. Conlon +6 more
TL;DR: It was concluded that attempts at catheter salvage with parenteral antibiotics has significant risks for complications and Hemodialysis patients with recently treated or ongoing bacteremia who complain about severe and debilitating back pain with or without neurologic findings should raise the suspicion of an occult epidural abscess.
