Respiratory risks from household air pollution in low and middle income countries
Stephen B. Gordon,Nigel Bruce,Jonathan Grigg,Patricia L. Hibberd,Om P Kurmi,Kin Bong Hubert Lam,Kevin Mortimer,Kwaku Poku Asante,Kalpana Balakrishnan,John R. Balmes,John R. Balmes,Naor Bar-Zeev,Naor Bar-Zeev,Michael N. Bates,Patrick N. Breysse,Sonia Buist,Zhengming Chen,Deborah Havens,Darby Jack,Surinder K. Jindal,Haidong Kan,Sumi Mehta,Peter P. Moschovis,Luke P. Naeher,Archana B. Patel,Rogelio Pérez-Padilla,Daniel Pope,Jamie Rylance,Sean Semple,William J. Martin +29 more
TL;DR: Evidence for the association between household air pollution and respiratory infections, respiratory tract cancers, and chronic lung diseases is reviewed, as well as study design issues and potential effective interventions to prevent these disease burdens.
Journal ArticleDOI
A cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstove intervention to prevent pneumonia in children under 5 years old in rural Malawi (the Cooking and Pneumonia Study): a cluster randomised controlled trial.
Kevin Mortimer,Kevin Mortimer,Chifundo B. Ndamala,Andrew Naunje,Jullita Malava,Cynthia Katundu,William Weston,William Weston,Deborah Havens,Daniel Pope,Nigel Bruce,Moffat J. Nyirenda,Duolao Wang,Amelia C. Crampin,Jonathan Grigg,John R. Balmes,John R. Balmes,Stephen B. Gordon,Stephen B. Gordon +18 more
TL;DR: It is found that an intervention comprising cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstoves reduced the risk of pneumonia in young children in rural Malawi and effective strategies to reduce the adverse health effects of household air pollution are needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Childhood Lead Exposure from Battery Recycling in Vietnam.
William E. Daniell,Lo Van Tung,Ryan M. Wallace,Deborah Havens,Catherine J. Karr,Nguyen Bich Diep,Gerry A. Croteau,Nancy Beaudet,Nguyen Duy Bao +8 more
TL;DR: In spite of improvements, lead exposure was still substantial and probably associated with continued home-based recycling, legacy contamination, and workplace take-home exposure pathways, and there is a need for effective strategies to manage lead exposure from battery recycling in craft villages.
Journal ArticleDOI
A health intervention or a kitchen appliance? Household costs and benefits of a cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstove in Malawi.
Katie Cundale,Ranjeeta Thomas,Jullita Malava,Deborah Havens,Kevin Mortimer,Kevin Mortimer,Lesong Conteh +6 more
TL;DR: The findings are encouraging from the perspective of acceptability, but without innovative financing mechanisms, general uptake and sustained use of the stove may not be possible in this setting and the question of whether the stoves should be marketed and championed as ‘health interventions’ is raised.
Journal ArticleDOI
Household Air Pollution and Acute Lower Respiratory Infections in Adults: A Systematic Review.
Hannah Jary,Hannah Jary,Hope Simpson,Deborah Havens,Geoffrey Manda,Daniel Pope,Nigel Bruce,Kevin Mortimer,Kevin Mortimer +8 more
TL;DR: A systematic review of the literature found limited evidence for an association between household air pollution and risk of acute lower respiratory infection in adults and additional research, with carefully defined exposure and outcome measures, is required.
