Connectivity of marine populations: open or closed?
TL;DR: Eulerian and Lagrangian flow models were used and the alternative process of larval retention near local populations is shown to exist and may be of great importance in the maintenance of marine population structure and management of coastal marine resources.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of spatial grouping on the functional response of predators
TL;DR: A unified mechanistic approach is given for the derivation of various forms of functional response in predator-prey models based on the principle of mass action but with the crucial refinement that the nature of the spatial distribution of predators and/or opportunities for predation are taken into account in an implicit way.
Journal ArticleDOI
Temporal variations in the separation of Brazil and Malvinas Currents
TL;DR: In this article, the location of the Brazil and Malvinas (Falkland) boundary currents from the continental margin over a multi-year period is determined by digitizing the crossing of the surface thermal front indicative of each feature with the 1000 m isobath.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inputs, losses and transformations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the pelagic North Atlantic Ocean
Anthony F. Michaels,Donald B. Olson,Jorge L. Sarmiento,James W. Ammerman,Kent A. Fanning,R. A. Jahnke,Anthony H. Knap,Fredric Lipschultz,Joseph M. Prospero +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the major standing stocks, fluxes and transformations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the pelagic regions of the North Atlantic, as one part of a larger effort to understand the entire N and P budgets in the Atlantic Ocean, its watersheds and overlying atmosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seascape Genetics: A Coupled Oceanographic-Genetic Model Predicts Population Structure of Caribbean Corals
TL;DR: A genetic model is developed that uses connectivity estimates from oceanographic models to predict genetic patterns resulting from larval dispersal in a Caribbean coral, and is compared to empirical data for threatened staghorn corals.
