Thermodynamic measurements were made for the binary mixture of water + γ-valerolactone (GVL) and for pure GVL to facilitate the development of the technology of lignin removal from lignocellulosic biomass (Fang, W.; Sixta, H. Advanced Biorefinery based on the Fractionation of Biomass in γ - Valerolactone and Water. ChemSusChem 2015, 8, 73−76). The density and vapor pressure of pure GVL as a function of temperature were measured and correlated for a wide range of the temperatures and pressures. Isothermal vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the binary mixture of water + GVL were measured at 350.2 K with a static total pressure apparatus. Absence of an azeotrope was confirmed by circulation still measurements with diluted GVL solutions. The oxidative decarboxylation of acids with carboxyl groups at secondary and tertiary C atoms under the action of the S2O82−- Ag+ and S2O82−-Ag+- Cu2+ systems is at least an order of magnitude faster than that of acids with COOH groups at a primary C atom, as a result of which 3- and 4-carboxyalkyl radicals with the general formula R'RĊ(CH2)nCOOH (R is alkyl or phenyl, R′ is H or alkyl, n=2 or 3) are generated with > 90% selectivity from 2-substituted glutaric and adipic acids.

The 3- and 4-carboxyalkyl radicals are completely or partially converted under their generation conditions into lactones. The selectivity of the oxidative lactonization increases from 0.30 to 0.97 along the series of radicals C2H5ĊH(CH2)3COOH, C2H5ĊH(CH2)2COOH, ĊH2(CH2)3COOH, ĊH2(CH2)2COOH, (CH3)2Ċ(CH2)2-COOH, and C2H5ĊH(CH2)2COOH in the case of the S2O82−-Ag+ system and from 0.72 to 1 along this series in the case of the S2O82−- Ag+- Cu2+ system.

Oxidation of dialkyl sulfones with systems containing sodium peroxydisulfate results in remote functionalization, the site of which is dependent on the length of the alkyl chain, in agreement with polar control of this reaction by the electron-acceptor sulfonyl group.

Butyl alkyl sulfones are selectively oxidized by Na2S2O8 to 3-oxobutyl alkyl sulfones, and oxidative chlorination in the system Na2S2O8-CuCl2 gives 3- and 4-chlorobutyl alkyl sulfones, the γ-chlorination products predominating.

In a sodium peroxydisulfate-sodium cyanide system, the aminyl radicals RCH2CH2NH generated from n-alky1amines undergo N-cyanation to form alkylureas, and are oxidized to aldimines, predecessors of N-alkyl alkanamides and 2,5,6-trialkyl-1,3-diox-4-enes.

The introduction of sodium hydroxide to the oxidizing system favors the increase in the yield of alkylureas and alkyl cyanamides to 70%. 2-(Alkylamino)alkanonitriles are also formed. A simple method for separating the reaction products has been developed.

In the oxidation of sec-alkylamine, cyclohexylamine, oxidative deprotonation predominates over the N-cyanation reaction.
