Deep learning in neural networks

We have developed a near-real-time computer system that can locate and track a subject's head, and then recognize the person by comparing characteristics of the face to those of known individuals. The computational approach taken in this system is motivated by both physiology and information theory, as well as by the practical requirements of near-real-time performance and accuracy. Our approach treats the face recognition problem as an intrinsically two-dimensional (2-D) recognition problem rather than requiring recovery of three-dimensional geometry, taking advantage of the fact that faces are normally upright and thus may be described by a small set of 2-D characteristic views. The system functions by projecting face images onto a feature space that spans the significant variations among known face images. The significant features are known as "eigenfaces," because they are the eigenvectors (principal components) of the set of faces; they do not necessarily correspond to features such as eyes, ears, and noses. The projection operation characterizes an individual face by a weighted sum of the eigenface features, and so to recognize a particular face it is necessary only to compare these weights to those of known individuals. Some particular advantages of our approach are that it provides for the ability to learn and later recognize new faces in an unsupervised manner, and that it is easy to implement using a neural network architecture.

▪ Abstract The prefrontal cortex has long been suspected to play an important role in cognitive control, in the ability to orchestrate thought and action in accordance with internal goals. Its neural basis, however, has remained a mystery. Here, we propose that cognitive control stems from the active maintenance of patterns of activity in the prefrontal cortex that represent goals and the means to achieve them. They provide bias signals to other brain structures whose net effect is to guide the flow of activity along neural pathways that establish the proper mappings between inputs, internal states, and outputs needed to perform a given task. We review neurophysiological, neurobiological, neuroimaging, and computational studies that support this theory and discuss its implications as well as further issues to be addressed

An integrative theory of prefrontal cortex function

A baseline or control state is fundamental to the understanding of most complex systems. Defining a baseline state in the human brain, arguably our most complex system, poses a particular challenge. Many suspect that left unconstrained, its activity will vary unpredictably. Despite this prediction we identify a baseline state of the normal adult human brain in terms of the brain oxygen extraction fraction or OEF. The OEF is defined as the ratio of oxygen used by the brain to oxygen delivered by flowing blood and is remarkably uniform in the awake but resting state (e.g., lying quietly with eyes closed). Local deviations in the OEF represent the physiological basis of signals of changes in neuronal activity obtained with functional MRI during a wide variety of human behaviors. We used quantitative metabolic and circulatory measurements from positron-emission tomography to obtain the OEF regionally throughout the brain. Areas of activation were conspicuous by their absence. All significant deviations from the mean hemisphere OEF were increases, signifying deactivations, and resided almost exclusively in the visual system. Defining the baseline state of an area in this manner attaches meaning to a group of areas that consistently exhibit decreases from this baseline, during a wide variety of goal-directed behaviors monitored with positron-emission tomography and functional MRI. These decreases suggest the existence of an organized, baseline default mode of brain function that is suspended during specific goal-directed behaviors.

We describe a model of invariant visual object recognition in the brain that incorporates different brain areas of the dorsal or 'where' and ventral or 'what' paths of the visual cortex. The dorsal 'where' path is implemented in the model by feedforward and feedback connections between brain areas V1, V2 and a PP module. The ventral 'what' path is implemented in a physiologically plausible four-layer network, corresponding to brain areas V1, V2, V4 and IT, with convergence to each part of a layer from a small region of the preceding layer, with feature-based attentional feedback connections, and with local competition between the neurons within a layer implemented by local lateral inhibition. In particular, the model explains the gradually increasing magnitude of the attentional modulation that is found in fMRI experiments from earlier visual areas (V1, V2) to higher ventral visual areas (V4, IT). The model also shows how the effective size of the receptive fields of IT neurons becomes smaller in natural cluttered scenes.

The physiological signals which terminate water intake are not well understood. It is possible that animals and humans may employ preabsorptive signals (generated by water acting in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, or small intestine), postabsorptive signals (generated by water acting in the hepatic portal system or in other extracellular or intracellular compartments), or some combination of preabsorptive and postabsorptive signals in order to recognize the appropriate moment to stop drinking. It is possible that the specific signals employed to stop drinking which has been generated by different means (water deprivation, food intake, or hormonal and pharmacological agents) may be different. Finally, of course, it is possible that different species utilize entirely different signals, or place differential emphasis on elements within the same array of physiological signals.1–9

Neuronal Activity in Relation to the Recognition of Stimuli in the Primate

To investigate the neural encoding of glutamate (umami) taste in the primate, recordings were made from taste responsive neurons in the cortical taste areas in macaques. Most of the neurons were in the orbitofrontal cortex (secondary) taste area. First, it was shown that there is a representation of the taste of glutamate which is separate from the representation of the other prototypical tastants sweet (glucose), salt (NaCl), bitter (quinine) and sour (HCl). Second, it was shown that single neurons that had their best responses to sodium glutamate also had good responses to glutamic acid. Third, it was shown that the responses of these neurons to the nucleotide umami tastant inosine 5′-monophosphate were more correlated with their responses to monosodium glutamate than to any prototypical tastant. Fourth, concentration-response curves showed that concentrations of monosodium glutamate as low as 0.001 M were just above threshold for some of these neurons. Fifth, some neurons in the orbitofrontal region, which responded to monosodium glutamate and other food tastes, decreased their responses after feeding with monosodium glutamate to behavioural satiety, revealing a mechanism of satiety. In some cases this reduction was sensory-specific. Sixth, it was shown in psychophysical experiments in humans that the flavor of umami is strongest with a combination of corresponding taste and olfactory stimuli (e.g. monosodium glutamate and garlic odor). The hypothesis is proposed that part of the way in which glutamate works as a flavor enhancer is by acting in combination with corresponding food odors. The appropriate associations between the odor and the glutamate taste may be learned at least in part by olfactory to taste association learning in the primate orbitofrontal cortex. Seventh, in neuroimaging experiments with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, it was shown that in humans umami taste produced by monosodium glutamate or by inosine monophosphate produced activation in a region of the anterior insula which is the putative human primary taste cortex and in a part of the orbitofrontal cortex which is the putative human secondary taste cortex.

A commentary is provided on issues raised in the Special Issue of Hippocampus (2023) on hippocampal system view representations. First, the evidence for hippocampal and parahippocampal spatial view cells in primates including humans shows that the allocentric representations provided by at least some of these cells are very useful for human memory in that where objects and rewards are seen in the world “out there” is a key component of episodic memory and navigation. Spatial view cell representations provide for memory and navigation to be independent of the place where the individual is currently located and of the egocentric coordinates of the viewed location and the facing direction of the individual. Second, memory and navigation in humans are normally related to the visual cues encoded by spatial view cells that define a location “out there” such as a building, hill, and so forth, not to an unmarked place without local cues and identified only by distant environmental/room cues. Third, “mixed” representations, for example of particular combinations of spatial view and place, can arise if the training has been for only some combinations of place and view, for that is what can then be learned by the hippocampus. Fourth, rodents, with their much less good visual acuity (~1 cycle/° in rats, compared with ~60 cycles/° for the human fovea), and rodents' very wide viewing angle for the world (~270°) might be expected, when using the same computational mechanisms as in primates, to use widely spaced environmental cues to define a place where the rodent is located, supported by inputs about place using local olfactory and tactile cues. Fifth, it is shown how view‐point dependent allocentric representations could form a view‐point independent allocentric representation for memory and navigation. Sixth, concept cells in humans and primates with connectivity to the hippocampus are compared.
