Journal ArticleDOI

Correlates of variation in the major/minor ratio of the ant, Pheidole dentata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

TL;DR: Major workers of the ant, Pheidole dentata, show a stronger alarm/defense response to members of the genus Solenopsis, including the fire ant, S. invicta, than to other kinds of ants, but differences are restored after the ratio has been perturbed experimentally.
Journal ArticleDOI

Weaver ants: social establishment and maintenance of territory

TL;DR: Workers of the African weaver ant Oecophylla longinoda recruit nestmates to previously unoccupied space by means of odor trails laid from the rectal gland, a hitherto unrecognized musculated organ located at the rear of therectal sac.
Journal ArticleDOI

Social modifications related to rareness in ant species

TL;DR: In the evolution of true sociality in insects, one potentially disadvantageous side effect is the reduction of the effective population size, but in the case of the social Hymenoptera, the effective size is clearly not the same as the number of adult individuals.
