Nest area exploration and recognition in leafcutter ants (Atta cephalotes)
Bert Hölldobler,Edward O. Wilson +1 more
TL;DR: Workers of Atta cephalotes deposit “nest exit pheromones” in the vicinity of their nest entrances, and when workers encounter deposits by alien colonies at this site, they increase the rate of abdominal dipping, thus seemingly adding colony-specific chemicals of their own.
Journal ArticleDOI
Systematics and the future of biology
TL;DR: Viewed in the framework of the history of biology, the subdisciplines of molecular and cellular biology are in the natural history period of their development, a perhaps surprising characterization can be clarified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular phylogeny of Indo‐Pacific carpenter ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Camponotus) reveals waves of dispersal and colonization from diverse source areas
Ronald M. Clouse,Milan Janda,Benjamin Blanchard,Prashant P. Sharma,Benjamin D. Hoffmann,Alan N. Andersen,Jesse E. Czekanski-Moir,Paul Krushelnycky,Christian Rabeling,Edward O. Wilson,Evan P. Economo,Eli M. Sarnat,David Emmanuel M. General,Gary D. Alpert,Ward C. Wheeler +14 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that the Pacific members of this group comprise several robust clades that have distinctly different biogeographical histories, and they suggest an important role for Australia as a source of Pacific colonizations.
