The applications of copper (Cu) and Cu-based nanoparticles, which are based on the earth-abundant and inexpensive copper metal, have generated a great deal of interest in recent years, especially in the field of catalysis. The possible modification of the chemical and physical properties of these nanoparticles using different synthetic strategies and conditions and/or via postsynthetic chemical treatments has been largely responsible for the rapid growth of interest in these nanomaterials and their applications in catalysis. In addition, the design and development of novel support and/or multimetallic systems (e.g., alloys, etc.) has also made significant contributions to the field. Density functional theory for transition metals and transition metal chemistry

Life on earth is almost entirely solar-powered. We can get some idea of the enormous quantity of energy received from the sun by noting that during daylight hours, the sun provides several thousand times more power to the surface of the U.S.A. than is produced by all of the nation’s electrical power stations. 1,2 Around 50% of the radiation that reaches the earth’s surface, roughly the visible region, is of a frequency useful to photosynthetic organisms. Oxygenic photosynthetic organisms convert this radiation into chemical energy, in the form of carbohydrate and dioxygen, at an optimal efficiency of something like 25%. 3 These products together sustain the rest of aerobic life, with carbohydrate acting as a source of high-energy electrons and dioxygen providing a lower-energy destination for these electrons. Reactivity of Dioxygen−Copper Systems

The X-ray structure of a 1:1 Cu/O2 adduct revealed side-on (η2) O2 coordination. Density functional calculations corroborated the structure, indicated a significant contribution of a Cu(III)−(O22-) resonance form, and provided insights into the key bonding interactions. Reaction of a 1:1 adduct supported by a slightly different β-diketiminate ligand with Cu(I) reagents resulted in the formation of novel asymmetric bis(μ-oxo) complexes that were identified by EPR, UV−vis, and Raman spectroscopy, as well as by an X-ray structure in one instance.
