TL;DR: The Fast Plasma Investigation (FPI) was developed for flight on the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to measure the differential directional flux of magnetospheric electrons and ions with unprecedented time resolution to resolve kinetic-scale plasma dynamics as mentioned in this paper.

Whistler anisotropy instabilities as the source of banded chorus: Van Allen Probes observations and particle-in-cell simulations
Xiangrong Fu,Misa Cowee,R. H. W. Friedel,Herbert O. Funsten,S. Peter Gary,George Hospodarsky,Craig Kletzing,William S. Kurth,Brian A. Larsen,Kaijun Liu,Elizabeth MacDonald,Kyungguk Min,Geoffrey D. Reeves,Ruth M. Skoug,Dan Winske +14 more
TL;DR: This paper uses spacecraft observations and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a magnetized, homogeneous, collisionless plasma to test the hypothesis that banded chorus is due to local linear growth of two branches of the whistler anisotropy instability excited by two distinct, anisotropic electron components of significantly different temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
New science in plain sight: Citizen scientists lead to the discovery of optical structure in the upper atmosphere
Elizabeth MacDonald,Elizabeth MacDonald,Eric Donovan,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Yukitoshi Nishimura,Nathan Case,D. Megan Gillies,B. Gallardo-Lacourt,B. Gallardo-Lacourt,W. E. Archer,Emma Spanswick,Notanee Bourassa,Martin Connors,Martin Connors,Martin Connors,Matt Heavner,Brian Jackel,B. Kosar,B. Kosar,David J. Knudsen,Chris Ratzlaff,Ian Schofield +21 more
TL;DR: Results suggest the arc is an optical manifestation of SAID, presenting new opportunities for investigation of the dynamic SAID signatures from the ground, and it is proposed to identify this arc as a Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE).
