Journal ArticleDOI
Broad scale forest cover reconstruction from historical topographic maps
Dominik Kaim,Jacek Kozak,Natalia Kolecka,Elżbieta Ziółkowska,Krzysztof Ostafin,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Urs Gimmi,Catalina Munteanu,Volker C. Radeloff +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess different methods to reconstruct land cover and land use from historical maps to identify a time-efficient and reliable method for broad-scale land cover change analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing differences in connectivity based on habitat versus movement models for brown bears in the Carpathians
Elżbieta Ziółkowska,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Volker C. Radeloff,Tobias Kuemmerle,Agnieszka Sergiel,Tomasz Zwijacz-Kozica,Filip Zięba,Wojciech Śmietana,Nuria Selva +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated how much connectivity assessments differ when based on resistance surfaces from habitat versus movement models, and how sensitive connectivity assessments are with respect to the parameterization of the movement models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of different matrix representations and connectivity measures on habitat network assessments
TL;DR: The results showed that matrix representation can greatly affect assessments of connections, but not patch prioritization, and that simpler matrix representations can be also used as a proxy to delineate those patches that are important for overall connectivity, but not to identify connections among habitat patches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Understanding unexpected reintroduction outcomes: Why aren't European bison colonizing suitable habitat in the Carpathians?
Elżbieta Ziółkowska,Kajetan Perzanowski,Kajetan Perzanowski,Benjamin Bleyhl,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Tobias Kuemmerle +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the case of reintroduced European bison (Bison bonasus L.) in the northern Carpathians, the authors show how habitat suitability models in combination with connectivity assessments based on circuit theory can remedy such shortcomings, and identify potential habitat patches and corridors between these.
Journal ArticleDOI
Potential habitat connectivity of European bison (Bison bonasus) in the Carpathians
Elżbieta Ziółkowska,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Tobias Kuemmerle,Tobias Kuemmerle,Kajetan Perzanowski,Kajetan Perzanowski,Volker C. Radeloff,Jacek Kozak +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used an existing bison habitat suitability map and data on dispersal barriers to derive cost surfaces, representing the ability of bison to move across the landscape, and to delineate potential con- nections (as least-cost paths) between currently occupied and potential habitat patches.
