Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Modified Gravity and Cosmology

The status of experimental tests of general relativity and of theoretical frameworks for analyzing them is reviewed and updated. Einstein’s equivalence principle (EEP) is well supported by experiments such as the Eotvos experiment, tests of local Lorentz invariance and clock experiments. Ongoing tests of EEP and of the inverse square law are searching for new interactions arising from unification or quantum gravity. Tests of general relativity at the post-Newtonian level have reached high precision, including the light deflection, the Shapiro time delay, the perihelion advance of Mercury, the Nordtvedt effect in lunar motion, and frame-dragging. Gravitational wave damping has been detected in an amount that agrees with general relativity to better than half a percent using the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar, and a growing family of other binary pulsar systems is yielding new tests, especially of strong-field effects. Current and future tests of relativity will center on strong gravity and gravitational waves.

Cosmology and the fate of dilatation symmetry

With recent improvements in ground and space-based telescopes, a large number of binary systems have been observed both within the solar system and beyond. These systems can take the form of asteroid pairs or even binary stars, with each component possessing a similar mass. In this investigation, periodic motions near large mass ratio binaries are explored using the circular restricted three-body problem, which is modified to include an additional three-body interaction. Discrete variational mechanics is leveraged to obtain periodic orbits that exhibit interesting shape characteristics, as well as the corresponding natural parameters. Shape characteristics and structural changes are explained using the stability and existence of equilibrium points, enabling exploration of the effect of an additional three-body interaction and conditions for reproducibility in a natural gravitational environment.

We review recent experimental searches for deviations from Newtonian gravity, which could arise from a postulated “fifth force”. New theoretical ideas on the origins and phenomenology of a possible fifth force are also discussed.

We answer the criticism that was raised against our Kemmer ${K}_{l3}$ theory by exhibiting in explicit calculational detail the inequivalence of the Kemmer and Klein-Gordon formulations of ${K}_{l3}$ decay, taking care to clearly define "inequivalence." It is shown that our published results are correct as stated, including the prediction of a zero in the scalar form factor.
