Journal ArticleDOI
Development of a Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase PCR Assay for Type A Influenza Virus and the Avian H5 and H7 Hemagglutinin Subtypes
Erica Spackman,Dennis A. Senne,T. J. Myers,Leslie L. Bulaga,Lindsey P. Garber,Michael L. Perdue,Kenton L. Lohman,Luke T. Daum,David L. Suarez +8 more
TL;DR: The sensitivity and specificity of the real-time PCR assay were directly compared with those of the current standard for detection of influenza virus: virus isolation in embryonated chicken eggs and hemagglutinin subtyping by hemagGLutination inhibition (HI) assay.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of a Real-Time Reverse-Transcription PCR for Detection of Newcastle Disease Virus RNA in Clinical Samples
Mark G. Wise,David L. Suarez,Bruce S. Seal,Janice C. Pedersen,Dennis A. Senne,Daniel J. King,Darrell R. Kapczynski,Erica Spackman +7 more
TL;DR: A positive correlation was obtained between the RRT-PCR results and virus isolation for NDV from clinical samples, and a real-time reverse-transcription PCR test was developed to detect avian paramyxovirus 1 (APMV-1) RNA in clinical samples from birds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recombination resulting in virulence shift in avian influenza outbreak, Chile.
David L. Suarez,Dennis A. Senne,Jill Banks,Ian H. Brown,Steve Essen,Chang-Won Lee,Ruth J. Manvell,Christian Mathieu-Benson,Valentina Moreno,Janice C. Pedersen,Brundaban Panigrahy,Hernán Rojas,Erica Spackman,Dennis J. Alexander +13 more
TL;DR: Sequence analysis of all eight genes of the LPAI virus and the HPAI viruses showed minor differences between the viruses except at the hemagglutinin (HA) cleavage site, which indicates a virulence shift.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza A Viruses Isolated from South Korea
Chang-Won Lee,David L. Suarez,Terrence M. Tumpey,Haan-Woo Sung,Yong-Kuk Kwon,Youn-Jeong Lee,Jun-Gu Choi,Seong-Joon Joh,Min-Chul Kim,Eun-Kyoung Lee,Jong-Myung Park,Xiuhua Lu,Jacqueline M. Katz,Erica Spackman,David E. Swayne,Jae Hong Kim +15 more
TL;DR: A phylogenetic analysis of the eight viral genes showed that the H5N1 poultry isolates from South Korea were of avian origin and contained the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes of the A/goose/Guangdong/1/96 (Gd) lineage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of Real-Time RT-PCR for the Detection of Avian Influenza Virus
Erica Spackman,Dennis A. Senne,L. L. Bulaga,T. J. Myers,Michael L. Perdue,L. Garber,Kenton L. Lohman,Luke T. Daum,David L. Suarez +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the AIV and H7 RRT-PCR assays are good tools for the rapid screening of flocks and LBMs.
